Basic Function

The News Director (ND) leads the planning, production and presentation of news. The ND supervises news staff and contributors. The ND also serves a community engagement function to connect with and inform the KCBX audience.

The ND reports to the program director and works in cooperation with station staff to support the station's on-and off-air community information efforts. The ND assists with news programming decisions and news operations.

The ND has responsibility and understanding of news planning, reporting, editing and production on all station platforms. The ND helps define and maintain ethical, editorial, artistic, and technical standards for news content.

Duties

News Content Preparation & Presentation (40%)

The ND plans, reports, produces and presents news content on a regular basis. The ND will typically produce an in-depth report and several quick turn-around reports in an average week. The ND may also anchor newscasts.

Community Issue Engagement (35%)

The ND has daily presence in the digital identity of KCBX - on Facebook, Twitter and the station website. The ND uses all platforms to advance a community conversation around the important issues affecting the region. This includes in-person appearances that engage the community. The ND produces and hosts a weekly interview radio program.

Department Management and Advancement (20%)

The ND engages in strategic planning, budget management, personnel management, hiring, training, record keeping, self-development and the proactive cultivation of professional partnerships and liaisons.

General Station Duties (5%)

The ND helps fundraise, serve on station committees, and provide public appearances and other activities in the general support of the station mission.

Other

The ND adheres to deadlines and makes timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention. The ND is the primary content manager during times of local crisis.

Qualifications

A four-year degree in journalism — or equivalent — required. Minimum three years full-time professional experience in journalism — preferably radio news. Familiarity with public radio news programming standards and values. Successful candidate will possess broad knowledge of local and regional issues. Must have ability to work within a live program environment and under tight time constraints. Must have training or experience in multi-media production, news writing and editing, and on-air presentation. Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills, effective news judgment and self-discipline. Skills should include facility with digital platforms, common computer applications and operation of light office equipment. Must have excellent memory for details, be able to meet daily deadlines under stressful conditions, and deal effectively multiple tasks simultaneously.

Salary range: $42,000 to $48,000

KCBX is an NPR affiliate, and also provides content from APM, PRI, and independent providers, along with local public affairs and music programming broadcast in three counties. KCBX is located in beautiful San Luis Obispo, CA, with beaches, mountains, lakes and wineries nearby, along with the Festival Mozaic, Cal Poly, the historic Mission San Luis Obispo, a symphony, an opera company, a ballet company, plus plenty of nightclubs, fine cuisine, year-round farmer's markets and a highly-rated school district.
