OVERVIEW:

Soundcheck is WNYC’s on-air and online destination for new music, live performances and engaging conversations with artists, critics and tastemakers. Those conversations begin at Soundcheck.org and continue with host John Schaefer every weeknight at 9 p.m. on 93.9 FM and WNYC.org.

The associate producer is responsible for creating content across multiple platforms, including digital, broadcast, social media and live events. That content will offer a New York point of view on the state of the music world. The producer also identifies the artists who perform in the Soundcheck studio and in the Greene Space. Also, this position supports this property’s ongoing digital development.

This position reports to Soundcheck’s executive producer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Pitch ideas and book guests for interviews, in-studio performances and digital features
  • Prepare background research, scripts and support material for host and staff
  • Write accurate, clear and lively copy for broadcast, web and promotion
  • Edit and prepare audio for broadcast and online content
  • Direct tapings, live broadcasts and special events
  • Support and expand Soundcheck’s digital mission
  • Effectively communicate with guests, external contacts and content partners
  • Supervise interns and volunteers
  • Pitch and oversee new series, features and collaborative NYPR projects
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of three years journalism experience, preferably in public radio or new media
  • Deep knowledge of multiple musical genres and topics/issues in music and the arts
  • Demonstrated knowledge of New York City area culture, news, history and geography
  • Audio production experience required. Knowledge of DAVID and ProTools helpful.
  • Web production experience required. Knowledge of a content management system helpful.
  • Highly collaborative self-starter who can meet deadlines
  • Extensive research skills required
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently
  • Maintain high journalistic standards for objectivity, balance and fairness

  • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with an impressive reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds
  • Use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods  including but not limited to; email, internet based applications for internal and external communications
  • Affinity for New York Public Radio content and mission a plus
  • Compliance with NYPR policies and guidelines
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed
