EDITORIAL ASSISTANT / ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

 

The Editorial Assistant / Administrative Assistant (EA/AA) is primarily responsible for providing phone coverage, secretarial support, general administrative assistance, and some research assistance to the Anchors and Senior Correspondents.

 

The EA/AA must interact with all levels of the PBS NewsHour staff and with individuals outside of the NewsHour directly, on the phone, and by email and mail. The EA/AA is expected to use good judgment in determining the relative importance and urgency of these communications, either forwarding or re-directing them to the appropriate staff member, or handling them directly. 

 

The EA/AA will undertake various administrative and/or secretarial tasks including scheduling and appointments, maintaining calendars, arranging travel and travel schedules, and compiling expense reports. In addition, the EA/AA is expected to supervise some administrative aspects of the Foreign DA's rotation, monitor the news wires and stay on top of daily news developments, and conduct research at the behest of the Anchors and Senior Correspondents.

 

With the Foreign DA, the person in this position handles guest travel arrangements for the program.  

 

The EA/AA is responsible for collecting the Washington PBS NewsHour personnel's bi-weekly

time reports and recording the reports in SoftTime.  

 

The EA/AA performs other PBS NewsHour duties as assigned, including (but not limited to) ordering meals for staff on late nights, maintaining the conference room schedule and coordinating guest visits to the control room.

 

This position is located in the studio building and reports to the Senior Broadcast Producer.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required, along with an excellent command of the English language; pleasant phone manner; excellent secretarial skills; efficient work habits; strong computer skills (including Microsoft Office and Word);  the ability to work independently under deadline pressure; and, a willingness to learn new skills as needed. Must be detail oriented. Familiarity with and interest in news and current affairs is also desired.

 

MINIMUM STARTING SALARY: Salary commensurate with experience (Overtime Eligible)

Grade: 13
