The Assistant Producer is responsible for working with and assisting WQXR’s programming team in producing and maintaining content for WQXR and The Jonathan Schwartz show including producing daily and recurring features, interviews, long-form programs/specials, imaging and modules.  The assistant producer will also be responsible for maintaining the social media profile for The Jonathan Schwartz Show. Audio production, copywriting and directing talent will be key parts of this position. Knowledge and fluency with the Great American Songbook as well as the New York and international classical music world are preferred. The successful candidate will possess a results-driven approach to his/her work, individually and within the team, while sustaining collaborative relationships with colleagues and partners. This position reports to the Assistant Program Director of WQXR.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Assist with the production of content including short feature stories, artist interviews and profiles and guest DJ sessions will help establish NYPR music properties including The Jonathan Schwartz Show and WQXR as the premiere provider of American standards, Opera and Classical music entertainment and information
  • Assist in the production of The Jonathan Schwartz Show
  • Write daily rundowns, scripts and other show prep materials for hosts as needed
  • Coordinate with WQXR digital staff to create online build-outs for The Jonathan Schwartz Show features, including copywriting and acquiring assets
  • Establish social media presence for The Jonathan Schwartz Show and maintain the channel’s profiles with consistent messaging/branding across different platforms
  • Maintain and regularly update promo and imaging inventory for The Jonathan Schwartz Show and other WQXR initiatives as needed
  • Assist with creation, development and maintenance of new streaming channels and other ways to reach and grow the NYPR audience
  • Assist with research and bookings for guest DJ features, interviews and performances
  • Assist in directing talent of recurring specialty shows, channel imaging and automated radio programs
  • Assist with the creation of long-form programming, short features and modules for specials or festivals on WQXR as needed
  • Assist with distribution of WQXR content and acquisition of third party content to and from  the EBU as needed
  • Compile and distribute quarterly Sound Exchange reports to rights-management organizations – Sound Exchange, ASCAP, BMI
  • Assist with WQXR automation and acquired programming operations, familiarity with NexGen, DAVID, PRX and Content Depot preferred
  • Assist with fundraising production and operations
  • Produce feature segments for station pledge drives as needed
  • Assist on other WQXR & NYPR music initiatives as needed
  • Comply with all New York Public Radio and department policies and guidelines
  • This position requires use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment; ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALUFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum 1-2 years radio experience required
  • Knowledge of classical music, standards and jazz, and familiarity with cultural institutions in New York City required
  • Facility with audio editing required; ProTools experience strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to write for radio required
  • Familiarity with radio broadcast systems, including music scheduling and automation preferred
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and concepts as necessary
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage several concurrent projects
  • Requires the intellectual and emotional depth, maturity, self-confidence and interpersonal skills to work effectively and/or interact with the other WQXR staff, executives at NYPR, board trustees, colleagues, industry representatives and cultural partners (as needed)
  • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with an impressive reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and AFTRA.
