Program places minority students in media industry positions

Washington, D.C., May 4, 2005 - The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has selected four public broadcasting stations to receive grants to participate in an internship program for minority students co-sponsored with the Emma L. Bowen Foundation. The four stations chosen to pilot public broadcasting's involvement in this highly successful program are KCET (Los Angeles), MPT (Baltimore), WNYC Radio (New York), and WOSU Radio (Columbus, OH).

"I am delighted that CPB has this opportunity to help foster the next generation of public broadcasting talent," said Ken Ferree, CPB's acting president and chief executive officer. "This is but one of the many ways that we are working to cultivate a broad range of voices, viewpoints, cultural perspectives, and ideas within public broadcasting."

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation has a 16-year track record of preparing students of color for careers in the media industry through a multi-year work/study program. Students begin the program as rising high school seniors and work each summer until graduation from college. The program focuses on academic excellence, hands-on experience, mentoring and professional development.

"Public broadcast stations offer a wide variety of training opportunities for our students, and we are thrilled to create this partnership with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the participating stations," said Phylis Eagle-Oldson, President and CEO of the Emma L. Bowen Foundation. "Our goal is create career opportunities for talented young professionals of color and thereby respond to industry's need for diverse talent in all aspects of the business."
