Library of Congress: Medal for Popular Song

A 90-minute gala tribute special that will honor a contemporary composer, songwriter, or performer whose lifetime of work represents a singular contribution to American popular music. The honoree will be selected by the Librarian of Congress, with the counsel of musical advisers, and the selection announcement could be timed with the induction of new song titles into the Library's National Recording Registry. The evening of musical performances will be taped in Washington, D.C., in April 2007 and will air in May 2007. The producers envisage the program as an annual special for public television's primetime schedule.
