Station Activity Survey (SAS)

The Station Activity Survey (SAS) collects information from public broadcasting stations about their operations so that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) can:

  • advocate the interests of public broadcasting to Congress, the Federal Communications Commission and the American public;
  • help stations and other public broadcasting organizations with planning and evaluation;
  • study and anticipate industry-wide trends;
  • and monitor the results of stations' equal employment opportunity practices.

SAS data also helps us to calculate the next fiscal year's Community Service Grants for our grantees. All CPB- supported grant recipients must complete the SAS survey in order to receive the second payment of the Community Service Grants.

Joint licensees must complete a separate SAS survey for TV and Radio.

Public Media Data Collection Project

CPB currently collects data from stations via the Annual Financial Report (AFR), the Station Activity Survey (SAS) and the Station Activities Benchmarking Study (SABS). The Public Media Data Collection Project is focused on reviewing the data collected in SABS and SAS and refining the questions to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of national organizations and stations, while reducing the station effort of submitting the data. A task force of representatives from stations and national organizations was formed to advise CPB on the project. Additional information about the task force and the project is available in the meeting summary. Questions or suggestions may be addressed to Datacollection@cpb.org.
