That the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
Expresses its Heartfelt Condolences to the Family of
Chairman, Board of Directors, NPR, 1983-1985
General Manager, WILL, 1973-2005
We will long remember with gratitude Mr. Mullally's years of service to WILL, NPR, and public broadcasting.
Mr. Mullally led WILL at the University of Illinois for more than four decades, pioneering a local public radio format based on news and information and championing equality for women in broadcast news.
Mr. Mullally became chairman of the NPR Board of Directors as NPR was facing its worst financial crisis, and he led efforts to bring the organization back from the brink of bankruptcy.
Mr. Mulally developed the member-supported funding structure for public radio, pushing through a plan to both give local stations more editorial and financial independence and give NPR a way to secure more outside funding.
Mr. Mullally used his eloquence and leadership abilities to help lay the foundation for the success of the modern NPR.
The Board extends its deepest sympathies to the Mullally family.
