Daniel K. Miller
Inaugural Daniel K. Miller PBS Station Leadership Award winner, 2016
Executive Director and General Manager of Iowa Public Television, 2002-2013
Director of Programming and Production, Iowa Public Television 1984-2002
Senior Producer for Public Affairs Programming, Iowa Public Television, 1977-1984
Producer - Reporter, Iowa Public Television, 1975-1977
We will long remember with gratitude Dan’s years of service in public broadcasting as a compassionate and visionary producer, programmer and leader.
In his 37 years Iowa Public Television, Dan built a legacy of editorial integrity, credibility and of public trust in the nine-station statewide network. He won numerous regional and national broadcast journalism awards and served on various boards and committees for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS, WGBH-TV, the BBC, and other public television organizations.
Under his leadership from 2002-2013, IPTV tripled its broadcast offerings and secured a national reputation for excellence, despite challenging budget circumstances and a rapidly changing media landscape. Dan guided the statewide network through the digital television transition and new content delivery systems, increased viewership and established previously unmatched coverage of Iowa. He guided creation of IPTV’s Learns, a statewide service that incorporates children’s programs during the mornings and evenings and how-to shows during the day.
In 2004, Dan warmly welcomed the CPB Board of Directors to Iowa for a CPB Board meeting.
In August 2016, PBS named him the inaugural winner of the Daniel K. Miller PBS Station Leadership Award to celebrate excellence in leadership at local stations and highlight those who strengthen and ensure the future of public media.
Dan also had a deep commitment to provide families and children with high quality children’s educational content and resources through the Ready To Learn program and was a tireless advocate for its funding.
We share the sorrow of Dan’s public media family in Iowa and across the country at his passing and extend our deepest sympathies to the Miller family.
