to the Family, Friends and Colleagues of
We will long remember with gratitude Susan's passionate advocacy for public media, her journalistic integrity, her community outreach and her work on behalf of public media regional and national initiatives.
Susan was a leader whose 45-year career in public broadcasting made a difference in so many lives in communities across Florida, Ohio, New York, Arkansas, Missouri, and Connecticut.
Since April 2010, Susan served as the President and CEO of WEDU in Tampa Bay, Florida. Under her leadership, WEDU expanded the station’s service, added new channels, produced important local content for the region such as the powerful documentary “Too Close to Home: Human Trafficking in Tampa Bay,” and increased community outreach on topics such as education, youth homelessness, veterans’ issues, race relations, and more.
Previously, Susan served as president of WCET in Cincinnati and held programming leadership positions at WNED/WNEQ in Western New York; WUFT-TV in Gainesville, Florida; KOZK-TV in Springfield, Missouri; and Connecticut Public Television. She also served public media on the national level including on CPB station advisory panels and as Vice Chair of the PBS Board of Directors for three years.
Susan will be remembered for her accomplishments, her leadership, her service to communities and her many friendships across public media.
We share the sorrow of Susan’s public media family in Florida and across the country at her passing and extend our deepest sympathies to the Howarth family.
