Who we are:

The Current began broadcasting in 2005 as a non-commercial, member-supported radio station based in Minneapolis / St. Paul, heard on 89.3 KCMP FM. Since then, the station has grown into a far-reaching community with members and listeners joining in from around the world. The Current brings listeners the best authentic new music alongside the music that inspired it, from local to legendary, indie to influential, new to nostalgic.


Intern, Local Music The Current

As the Local Music Intern, you will support the strategic goals of The Current's local music initiatives.  You will have the opportunity to help us better serve our audiences who come to The Current to be connected to local music communities throughout the State.  The position will enhance our ability to serve a larger segment of our local music community through assisting our local music team's work via programming, events and promotions.  By joining our team, you will help to expand The Current's work within our existing network of local artists and bring your own perspective on music to the team.


Key Learning Goals:

  • Observe and learn about the day-to-day operations of the radio station and our portfolio of digital content.
  • Opportunity to make contributions to our local music programming and learn how we evaluate the performance of our local music programming.
  • Gain experience through observing and supporting the production of content for the radio, website, and video platforms.



  • Help screen and prepare music for use on The Current and
  • Engage with our staff to support preproduction for sessions and interviews with local musicians.
  • Support the research and compilation of information related to local releases and events.
  • Bring a new creative perspective to our team and help us come up with ideas (big and small) to better support the community of listeners and local musicians who follow The Current.



  • Partial subsidy for onsite parking or bus transportation. Day to day transportation is your responsibility.
  • Eligible to accrue for sick and safe time off.

  • Participate in robust on-boarding experience.
  • Professional development: on-the-job training, personality assessment training, formal performance review feedback sessions, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors in an undergraduate or Master's program OR have earned a degree within the last 12 months.
  • Basic knowledge of office suite and productivity tools.
  • Basic knowledge of audio editing software.
  • Awareness and knowledge of the programming and music provided by The Current.
  • An interest in local music and the local music community.
  • A desire to work in public media and/or pursue a career in the music industry.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Audio editing experience.
  • Video editing experience.
  • Experience DJ'ing and creating playlists.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms.
