WMMT 88.7 FM, the community radio station of Appalshop in Whitesburg, Kentucky, seeks a News Reporter/Producer to take part in the tri-state Ohio Valley ReSource regional journalism collaborative.
WMMT was founded in 1985 and is part of Appalshop, a 50-year-old non-profit media arts and education center. WMMT broadcasts 24-hours a day to portions of five states at 88.7FM, and streams online to listeners around the world. Our broadcast schedule is anchored by a roster of 50 volunteer community DJs and a mix of public affairs programming and special projects, such as our world-renowned show Calls From Home that connects incarcerated listeners with their loved ones.
The Ohio Valley ReSource is a regional journalism collaborative reporting on economic and social change in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. The ReSource operates as a remote newsroom, with a team of six multimedia journalists, a managing editor, and a data journalist working together to cover the region’s most pressing issues.
The WMMT & Ohio Valley Resource Reporter/Producer reports to the WMMT General Manager and Ohio Valley ReSource Managing Editor. The multimedia journalist covers the transition underway in Central Appalachia. Past reporting done in this role has led to major national awards, partnerships, and broadcast opportunities. Topics of focus have included investigations into black lung disease, lacking infrastructure for clean water and internet access, and the legacy costs of the coal industry.
75 percent of the Reporter/Producer’s time will be dedicated to working remotely with the Ohio Valley ReSource to report and produce high-quality feature stories for broadcast and web, as well as occasional quick-turnaround pieces.
The other 25 percent of time will be spent collaborating with WMMT and Appalshop staff, primarily focused on producing audio content for the station’s public affairs programming, which focuses on regional history and heritage, arts and culture, health, environmental issues, the economy, and prison justice.
- Work with the Ohio Valley ReSource team to report and produce 2-7 minute sound-rich audio features and accompanying web articles, as well as occasional spots and special projects, for distribution by Ohio Valley ReSource stations.
- Follow news relating to community welfare and economic revitalization in central Appalachia.
- Collaborate on occasional special projects with other Appalshop/WMMT staff and community partners.
- Seek out additional regional and national outlets for broadcast of completed stories.
- Assist with digital workflow, including web and social media posts.
- Participate in Appalshop and WMMT staff meetings and self-governance.
- Assist with WMMT spring and fall fund drives.
Experience with journalism, audio storytelling, or a related artistic medium is preferred, but candidates with other kinds of relevant interests or experience will also be considered.
The WMMT & Ohio Valley ReSource Reporter/Producer is a year-round, full time position at 35 hours a week. The position is based in Whitesburg, Kentucky in a salary range of $35-40,000 with full paid benefits.
