Job Description:
Arizona Public Media is looking for a General Assignment Producer to join Arizona Illustrated production team. Arizona Illustrated is a mini documentary program that engages southern Arizona's viewers with thought-provoking, diverse stories that reflect our community through stunning photography and powerful storytelling.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished television story producer with a proven track record of creating compelling visual content for broadcast and digital platforms and an experienced storyteller with multi-media skills, strong editorial judgment, excellent interviewing skills, extensive experience in field production, knowledge of and practical experience with video photography and non-linear editing, and an individual who is naturally inclined to engage via social media. The successful candidate will join a growing team of producers providing content for multiple media platforms including digital, television, and radio. The primary assignments of this position will be the creation “mini-documentaries” for Arizona Illustrated.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished video and audio package reporter/producer, experienced in translating complex public affairs issues to video, audio, and digital stories. Their primary responsibility will be to research, write, and deliver stories, across formats – two-way interviews, field-based reporting, and to develop and maintain meaningful relationships with diverse communities across Southern Arizona, including the primarily Spanish speaking communities.

 

Additionally, as the AZPM newsroom is looking to create more cross-platform/program content, the successful candidate will also have the ability to create content and report on topics for the AZPM news team.

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Write and produce high-quality broadcast content that presents complex issues clearly, maintaining a consistently accurate, fair, balanced, and professional product, meeting deadlines for the respective platform or program.
  • Ensure that work is accurate, fair, balanced, and professional.
  • Operate video/audio equipment, non-linear video editing systems, and drive University vehicles as necessary.
  • Write content, engage with visitors, and post on AZPM online, blog, and social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook on a daily basis.
  • Research subject matter, cultivate sources, develop story ideas, book guests, conduct interviews.
  • Adhere to AZPM’s Code of Editorial Ethics and Practices and AZPM’s Editorial Standards. Actively participate in creating and maintaining a professional and cooperative working environment.

  • Knowledge and understanding of cross-platform (digital, audio, video), content production techniques and workflows.
  • Ability to tell compelling character-driven stories.
  • Knowledge of audio-visual terminology and basic skill for non-linear editing.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with public broadcasting conversational style delivery.
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to function as a team-player who also has the ability to train and mentor (students and junior staff).

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience in cross-platform (digital, television, radio), content production techniques and workflows.
  • Experience with non-linear editing systems (e.g., Adobe Premier, Final Cut, Avid, Resolve).
  • Experience with multi-media and digital camera operations.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience with online search and social media tools.
  • Experience with live studio, field, and remote production.
  • Experience with public broadcasting conversational style delivery.
