Job Description:

Blue Lake Public Radio, a Division of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in West Michigan, is looking for a General Manager with the background, energy, and creativity to lead an exceptional radio station.  Blue Lake Public Radio (WBLU & WBLV), serving the Grand Rapids metro and the broader West Michigan region with 2 transmitters, is primarily a music station providing classical music and jazz to its audience since 1982.  The General Manager, an executive position, is responsible for nearly every aspect of the operation.

 

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent of education and/or experience in a related field; administrative, managerial, and organizational skills; experience in public (or commercial) broadcasting; extensive background in development; on-air experience preferred; knowledge of Classical Music and Jazz.

Specific Duties Include:

Provide sound financial management and structure, including tasks such as:

  • Establishing and managing an annual budget by monitoring income and expenses and making adjustments when necessary to keep it in balance
  • Creating new avenues and ideas for generating income
  • Generating and managing capital projects

Serve as primary development representative for Blue Lake Public Radio by completing responsibilities such as but not limited to:

  • Establishing and maintaining underwriting accounts
  • Establishing and maintaining grant relationships with area foundations
  • Maintaining relationships with area arts organizations
  • Designing and implementing membership mailings and on-air fundraising drives
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with major donors
  • Managing special fundraising events
  • Cooperating with the Blue Lake Development Department regarding donor prospect management and underwriting sales.

Manage full time on-air and support personnel in conjunction with the Station Manager, including but not limited to:

  • Providing leadership and guidance by communicating effectively with staff and volunteers
  • Delegating responsibilities fairly and effectively among staff
  • Establishing consistent, well-defined goals and expectations for employees
  • Addressing concerns and offering opportunities for feedback
  • Conducting regular evaluations with radio employees
  • Ensure that personnel understand and abide by Company policies, as established in Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp’s Employee Manual

Provide guidance in areas relating to radio industry, including but not limited to:

  • Knowledge of FCC and CPB regulations and procedures; NPR procedures; and radio technology
  • Fulfilling all FCC, CPB, NPR, and other network requirements
  • Managing all technical and engineering issues
  • Managing tower leases
  • Maintain the lease of the Grand Rapids office/studio
  • Oversee licensee mandated program format percentages
  • Maintain communications, as needed, with legal counsel

Oversee the radio division’s services relating to Summer Camp operation, including but not limited to:

  • Promoting camp services and events via public service announcements
  • Live broadcasts and recordings of summer concerts
  • Student, staff, and faculty CD sales
  • Implementation of educational components, such as the Radio Broadcasting Minor for campers

Manage the radio’s various public media venues, including but not limited to:

  • Maintaining and updating the Radio web pages in cooperation with the Asst. Camp Director
  • Providing content for social media postings
  • Designing and placing print advertising

Serve as primary spokesperson for Blue Lake Public Radio through community relations, such as:

  • Appropriately representing Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp by establishing and maintaining strong relationships with listeners and members, community leaders, and business leaders
