Job Description:

The Mountain West News Bureau is an award-winning collaboration of a dozen NPR affiliates in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. We're looking for an editor to handle digital versions of bureau content, and serve as a liaison with partner stations and NPR. As the final stop before online publication, the editor ensures content is accurate, fair and comprehensive. The editor also looks for ways to innovate and broaden the bureau’s reach. 

This is a part-time, remote contract position. That allows flexibility within the bureau’s standard workday: 9-to-5 Mountain Time.

Duties include:

– working with the bureau’s managing editor and reporter to plan broadcast and digital coverage

– editing spots and features – line editing, fact-checking, finding images, checking headlines and photo cutlines, adding links and applying tags

– meeting the needs of stations within the MWNB collaboration, and searching for digital efficiencies

– building landing pages for series and other special projects

– finding opportunities for photo essays and data visualizations,

– monitoring systems that allow seamless content sharing

– finding new ways to broaden the MWNB’s reach, through social media, newsletters and other opportunities

– filling in for the managing editor during vacations

Required skills:

– knowledge of key regional issues such as drought, wildfire and energy development

– ability to communicate effectively and at a high level both orally and in writing

– coaching, mentoring and training staff on digital platforms and best practices

– demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to anticipate problems before they arise

– ability to interact with people in a positive, professional manner, displaying interpersonal skills that indicate a high level of experience, professionalism and confidence

– strong journalistic ethics

– familiarity with public radio programming

– understanding of the unique demographic and psychographic make-up of the public radio audience, and the ability to communicate to audience members from a variety of educational, cultural and economic backgrounds

– knowledge of content management systems such as Grove, used by most NPR stations
