  CPB is currently seeking to hire a Director, Business & Administration (level 8).  Salary $70,500 - $110,100.  This position reports directly to the SVP, Television Content.

  General Description:

Manage the business operations of the Television Content department including coordinating business planning and internal processes in order to achieve department objectives.  Ensures department business planning and grantee budgets and expenses are financially sound and managed with financial integrity and appropriate oversight; and operational activities are coordinated within the department and across the organization to guarantee execution in accordance with established plans, procedures and policy requirements. 

  Manages all traffic flow, including audit resolutions, quality and corporate compliance within the department; and effectively implements processes to ensure oversight of its financial and business operations.

  Specific Duties:

  • Coordinates the development of the department’s business plan by working closely with the department’s leadership.  Establishes departmental budgets that support operations to achieve the established objectives.
  • Adheres to CPB’s financial processes to ensure the adequacy of financial controls and compliance with CPB financial policies and procedures.  Approves staff expense reports, invoices and other department expenses as authorized.  Reconciles monthly financial statements to verify department expenditures.
  • Provides budget analysis and oversight by reviewing proposed project/production budgets, and financial reports ensuring uniformity and compliance with CPB’s policies; Provides business operations support to department leadership in the development and execution of content initiatives and strategies; and guidance to staff in the review of deliverables.
  • Defines appropriate work processes to ensure efficient operations within the department and throughout CPB.  Manages department responses to audits conducted by the Office of the Inspector General. Coordinates with attorneys to ensure contracts are completed in a timely fashion and in priority order.  Works to minimize institutional risk by acting as a responsible steward for CPB.  
  • Designs and implements departmental project management processes in order to assist and monitor the department’s grant-makingactivities,  and evaluate project performance againstobjectives.
  • Creates and utilizes a variety of vehicles and methodologies to disseminate, educate, and communicate with others internal and external to the department, including CPB leadership and the CPB Board, regarding departmental activities, performance against objectives, budget/financial status, CPB policies and procedures, and other relevant analytics and/or requested information.
  • Prepares reports/minutes, participates in and/or leads meetings, conducts training/presentations, and provides briefings as necessary to support ongoing and effective communications, ensure appropriate follow-up, and secure completion of required actions/activities. 
  • Acts as an internal consultant to and partner with departmental leadership to ensure that departmental operations, processes, and systems are integrated, and department expectations are reinforced across the team.  Acts as a liaison with Office of the General Counsel , the Office of the COO and other departments as appropriate.
  • As assigned, manages special projects and grant assignments assuming primary responsibility from concept development to specific contractual documents.
  • Recommends changes in direction, new approaches, and/or new procedures and processes to ensure compliance with corporate policies and procedures and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s operations. 
  • Maintains productive relationships with grantees and other external stakeholders within the public broadcasting system including finance, business affairs, programming, and production management staff.
  • Provides effective leadership to department staff, establishing an environment that fosters collaboration, accountability, quality, and teamwork.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, project management or related field (liberal arts or science degrees will be considered with the appropriate experience).
  • Seven years of related business experience with responsibilities requiring skills in project management, grants administration, contracting, budget development and financial/business analysis, and/or administrative management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skills related to project management (e.g. establishing goals, planning, organizing and managing resources – including budget), monitoring progress, and analysis.
  • Experience with or knowledge of production budgeting or programming operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and lead staff and work independently, as well as with others on a team.
  • Solid understanding of financial, budget and business planning processes. Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines, while having an attention to detail and quality.  Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a demonstrated proficiency in business writing and analytical skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop a plan of action and to seek new and innovative techniques and solutions.
  • Some travel required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced business or similar degree.
