Director of Finance & Administration


Position Overview. As a key member of the KMFA senior management team, the director of finance & administration (DFA) provides financial leadership for the organization, building and managing effective systems to supply critical financial information to senior management and the board. Reporting to the CEO, the DFA will be a hands-on manager as well as a strategic thought partner responsible for successful oversight of KMFA’s financial and administrative activities, human resources, and capital management. The DFA will collaborate with all departments to support the advancement of departmental goals, foster innovation, encourage staff development, and maintain open communication.


Essential Job Functions


Financial Management

  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and accompanying reports, keeping the leadership team up to date on financial matters.
  • Serve the board finance committee, maintaining contact with treasurer and preparing information for committee and board meetings.
  • Perform periodic re-forecasts; collect, analyze, and consolidate financial data; and recommend plans and revisions as needed.
  • Develop long-range financial models to assess and support strategic initiatives.
  • Coordinate the annual audit process, working with external auditors and the finance      committee of the board of directors. With auditor, complete filings of Federal 990s, Corporation for Public Broadcasting reports, and other governmental returns as required.
  • Monitor and manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Reconcile individual giving, underwriting, and grant contribution tracking systems with the development team.
  • Assist the development and underwriting staff with preparing reports, monitoring, and reconciling revenue.
  • Attend board meetings and permanent endowment fund trustee meetings, providing reports and making presentations as requested.
  • Review and update financial policies as needed to ensure best practices and compliance with all relevant regulatory agencies.


Human Resources, Facilities and Administration

  • Oversee administrative functions as well as facilities to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization grows.
  • Manage relationships with KMFA property management, vendors, and banks.
  • Further develop KMFA’s human resources administration, ensuring best practices in professional development, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation, training and recruiting.
  • Ensure recruiting processes are consistent and compliant with EEO guidelines.
  • Administer employee retirement plan (TIAA-CREF)
  • Work collaboratively with engineering and IT departments to ensure consistent delivery of needed business and administrative services.
  • Assist all departments in improving use of financial and management systems.


 Qualifications & Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a nonprofit financial management position, ideally 5-7 years of broad financial, HR, and administrative experience
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with – staff and volunteers who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds
  • Proficient in QuickBooks, Sage 50, Marketron and Microsoft Office programs and online tools
  • Knowledge of GAAP; experience with preparation of audits and tax returns
  • A track record in grants management
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; knowledge of accounting and reporting software
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organizational, and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills
  • A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment
  • Appreciation of classical music helpful; public radio experience helpful
