The News & Politics Editor is a seasoned multimedia expert who leads a team of public-interest journalists producing stories for Cascade Public Media. Together, this team investigates and explains the dramatic changes underway in Seattle, Puget Sound and the Pacific Northwest; watchdogs elected leaders, public officials and government agencies; and facilitates dialogue between community members and policymakers, and across urban-rural, east-west, red-blue and racial/cultural divides. Key Job Responsibilities

I. Manage  

  1. Working alongside the Executive and Managing Editors, help to influence the overall growth of the Crosscut newsroom success and audience strategies for our nonprofit public media newsroom
  2. Manage a team of reporters and work with video producers to create an atmosphere that encourages innovative, enterprising and high-impact journalism
  3. Manages an annual budget for the News & Politics section, responsible for projecting story production costs and ensuring operational efficiencies when approving new projects
  4. Provides for an additional strong presence in the newsroom; contributing to newsroom leadership influence, ensuring overall quality of final stories, backing up other senior editors and copy chief with editing responsibilities

II. Audience Impact 

  1. Assign and edit news stories from staff and freelance writers, ensuring that their reporting meets journalistic and organizational standards for fairness, thoroughness and quality
  2. Collaborate with Crosscut photographers, videographers and web developers in the newsroom to create stories that are visually compelling and incorporate a range of media
  3. Plan and work closely with internal Audience Engagement team to amplify and engage with Crosscut’s growing digital audiences ahead of planned publication of News & Politics stories
  4. Serve as a leader in the development of innovative journalism projects that require strategic planning and follow-thru in order to achieve success

III. Represent 

  1. Serve as a Cascade Public Media thought-leader and representative at community and partner events, industry gatherings and in other formal settings
  2. Develop a network of contacts in the community that can help identify compelling issues that are not currently being adequately covered by other media outlets
  3. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, new media, business or a related field or equivalent experience required
  2. At least six years of experience as a writer or editor in a deadline-oriented environment; local news/politics-related preferred
  3. At least four years of experience managing editorial staffers; local news/politics-related preferred
  4. Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; significant experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key internal and external relationships, as well as the ability to mentor less experienced employees
  7. Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment
  8. Deep understanding of journalism ethics and practices, with nonprofit or public media experience preferred
  9. Experience with digital media platforms, multimedia storytelling tools and techniques, and social media

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods

2. Ability to regularly type on a keyboard for long periods of time

3. Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
