Job Description:

Curious City is a people-powered news-gathering project designed to answer questions the public asks about Chicago, the region and the people who live here. We are looking for a multimedia journalism intern who has zeal for telling stories that connect our audience to their region.

With mentoring from the team’s multimedia producer and editors, you will research stories, practice shooting and editing video, create story graphics and maintain strong relationships with the public through social media and in-person interviews. You will also develop career-building skills in conceiving, critiquing and editing multimedia stories. By the end of the internship, you will have produced a web feature that you can use for your portfolio. Past interns have answered questions like how Chicago’s current gang violence compares to gang warfare under Al Capone and how recycling rules work in Chicago.

You should be curious about learning about the working of Chicago and its history.  As our Multimedia Intern, you should be comfortable using social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and have experience writing and editing news stories, either through previous internships or classwork. Experience with audio or video production, graphic design, photography and other multimedia content a huge plus.

How We Select Interns
Our intern selection process is structured to gauge your writing and news judgment. The first round is us reading through cover letters and resumes. The second round is an interview with our selection committee, where we ask you to present story pitches and give feedback about some of our programming. If you make it to second-round candidate, interviews will either be in person or via video chat if you are out of town.
Don’t Forget Your Cover Letter!
Cover letters help us learn a little bit about you, and what you hope to get out of an internship. It also gives us a sample of your writing style. Your cover letter should tell us why you want to pursue a career in journalism and media. We want to learn about your career goals and what type of skills you want to learn or strengthen in an internship. We are especially interested in hearing how your experiences and perspectives (personal, professional, academic, or otherwise) could potentially bring a diverse perspective to our programming.

Want to make your cover letter really stand out? Include links to your portfolio or links to any news writing samples, podcasts, or story packages you may have done.
Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.
