DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Local TV productions:

Local TV productions is part of GBH News and produces daily program, Greater Boston, addressing important local issues and featuring interviews with policy and news makers as well as innovative thinkers.  The Local TV productions also produces weekly show, Basic Black, which focuses on the interests of people of color and Open Studio, which features interesting and meaningful arts scene in this region.  All of the shows have won numerous awards with a focus on local issues and community engagement.

 

JOB OVERVIEW

The position will report to the Local TV Producer, and will be an integral part of the GBH Newsroom.  The ideal candidate should have television experience and be familiar with television production from start to finish.  A live television broadcast experience is preferred, along with knowledge and experience working in a multi-platform format, particularly on digital platforms.  Experience with researching wide range of local and national topics, news, and potential guests and experts is essential.  The ideal candidate must be a critical thinker, who is curious and excited about subjects and issues on a variety of topics.  The person must also possess the ability think of ways to execute those ideas.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Editorial/Research

  • Ability to research stories and topics that can be used for potential upcoming shows; help identify and secure potential guests; ability to gather research for the host in advance to prepare for the program.

 

Social Media/Digital

  • Social media/digitally savvy.  Must possess the ability to post interesting elements onto the show’s social media and upload the show onto the show digital media sites – Facebook, You Tube, Instagram and website.

Production

  • Search, find and log video or stills that could enhance the show; prepare lower-third/chyron/font credits; knowledge of licensing and clearing video and stills for broadcast and digital.

General Administrative

  • Schedule and manage makeup for talent and guests; Organizational skills; Coordination of talent and guests; Input show data into PIM system

 

SKILL SET

  • Professional demeanor, responsible, mature and adaptable to changing situations, along with the ability to work with multiple internal departments

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, keeping production team and others up to date on changes and vital and important information.

  • Editorial experience: comfortable and curious about searching and finding a broad scope of stories and topics; news judgment; possess an understanding of issues and what’s going on in the news and relevant community issues; Some knowledge of licensing and clearing video and stills for broadcast and digital.

  • Excellent attention to detail; Ability to write, copy-edit and proofread work for tone, clarity, spelling and grammar on the air (fonts/chyrons/lower thirds) and written work.

  • Understanding of the production process of producing a show for air; logging tapes, possess a keen eye for interesting video and shots to incorporate into the program. Able to work with and communicate with production team; Create and organize shoots/call sheets; experience going out with a crew, doing mos’s, gathering b-roll and possibly doing interviews.

  • Willingness to learn, try things out, work on ideas; Self-motivated.

  • Ability to see other people’s points of view and welcome constructive feedback. Proven experience in problem-solving and critical thinking practices within a culturally diverse working environment.

  • Ability to manage workload effectively.

  • Must be comfortable with working autonomously for periods of time and with a group.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and knowledgeable in working on editing software such as Premiere or Avid. 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelors or equivalent work experience. 3-4 years of relevant experience.  At least two years working on a commercial/public television broadcast television program, preferably live television. Experience using digital formats and social media platforms
