GBH News is Boston’s only fully integrated local public media entity with Television, Radio and Digital all working in one newsroom. Our daily goal is to go beyond the headlines, examining the deeper topics and themes, and adding context and perspective to stories we cover. JOB OVERVIEW

The Radio Associate Producer for Morning Edition is a key position on our morning magazine show. The position requires strong writing and digital audio editing skills, and the ability to work with a small morning team and a growing newsroom cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure. The ideal candidate will be well organized and have at least 1-3 years experience in journalism and/or audio production. They will understand the NPR style and demonstrate comfort with using audio and text editing software. The candidate must have the ability to present balanced reporting, fairness and fidelity to facts, and feel comfortable calling sources, both during breaking news and to schedule interviews. The candidate must be intellectually curious and a close watcher of the news, both locally and nationally.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify, research and write newscast copy and continuity from all available sources. This will include call-outs for live interviews and setting up content for the following day’s broadcast.

  • Work closely with the show host on the editorial flow of the show, while continuing to generate news copy for newscasts and billboards.

  • React to breaking news; book guests, keep host informed; help to coordinate reporters in the field.

  • Generate story ideas; research, write, produce and edit pieces.

  • Write stories and updating content for GBHNews.org and other digital platforms.

  • Work on special projects as assigned. This may include assisting on-air pledge and fundraising activities.

 

SKILL SET

  • Must be a self-starter and able to work collaboratively with a small staff

  • This position requires a strong writing, voicing and digital editing skills and the ability to work within a growing newsroom, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure

  • Superb writing skills – both broadcast and print – showing originality and humor; experience writing for broadcast or print required

  • Excellent verbal communication and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines; ability to be flexible as news breaks or show rundowns change

  • Positive attitude, ability to work with editors and other producers in a team environment

  • Excellent computer skills, ability to understand how to use a field recorder

  • News literacy – and we mean it!

  • Ability to think about big-picture approaches to covering issues and ideas, while also executing the many small details and tasks involved in producing a weekly show

  • Familiarity with a range of social media platforms, content management systems

  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities

  • Experience producing with Adobe Audition, Cubase, or similar broadcast digital audio workstations

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelors/Masters Degree or equivalent work experience. Must have at least 1-3 years of radio and broadcast journalism experience,
