POSITION SUMMARY: 90.3 KAZU is hiring a News Reporter-Producer who will be a voice for a trusted news source in the Monterey Bay Area. This reporter-producer will be based at the KAZU studios in Seaside. Responsibilities include reporting, conducting source interviews, writing and editing audio stories for broadcast on 90.3 KAZU and NPR partners.
The Reporter-Producer works under the general supervision of the News Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Reporter / Producer
• Produces audio news stories for broadcast:
• Researches local issues, interviews sources and records audio in the field and studio
• Produces promos for stories ahead of broadcast
• Writes broadcast script and voice tracks stories
• Edits scripts with the News Director or assigned editor
• Edits audio using Adobe Audition
• Manages and produces digital content
• Writes companion web stories for audio pieces following AP Style
• Edits web pieces with News Director or assigned editor
• Takes photos / video to accompany web story and/or social media
• Creates podcasts, newsletters and other digital format pieces
• Crafts social media content, including photos / video
• Tracks metrics for digital content
• Contributes to administrative tasks
• Attends weekly news meetings
• Adds potential stories to news production calendar
• Helps maintain source tracking database
• Helps maintain FCC Issues/Programs report
• Understands the basics of station operations.
• Must be able to manually send out an emergency alert via EAS.
• Must be able to turn the transmitter on and off.
• When applicable, must be able to assist if the station goes off the air.
• Regularly scheduled on-air hosting determined by department needs
• Participates in KAZU's three times a year on-air fundraising campaigns.
• Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the radio station.
• Appear at concerts, events or other station promotions
• Perform other duties as assigned by News Director

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to verbally communicate to exchange information; and to occasionally travel to other offices or locations to cover news stories, attend meetings, or to pick up or deliver materials.

• Ability to work from home: adequate internet connection and ergonomically sound and quiet workspace required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
• Excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to write concise, clean copy in a fast-paced environment
• Experience with broadcast journalism, specifically using voice and sound to report news stories
• Ability to juggle multiple stories of varying lengths and complexities, from quick-turn breaking news stories, to long-form podcasts or news series.
• Ability to develop and track human sources and mine online resources and data for information
• Knowledge of journalism ethics, reporting standards and the mission of public radio journalism.
• Experience with standard broadcast field recording and studio equipment.
• Familiar with AP style
• Proficient with digital audio editing using Adobe Audition or similar software.
• Superb verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Comfortable working with a wide range of software, including the Adobe Suite and G-Suite
Education and Experience:Four-year degree from an accredited college or university in journalism or related field AND professional experience in the news department of a public radio station or equivalent.
Experience at a public radio station and familiarity with NPR standards and practices are desirable. Knowledge of current Monterey and/or Santa Cruz County and regional issues. A background in journalism, production and/or broadcast operations. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population.
Special Conditions of Employment:
The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

The hiring salary for this position is $30.00 per hour. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
