The healthcare reporter will focus on telling audio and digital stories of people struggling to access care in Central Texas, as well as efforts to address disparities and change the system. The position will also cover how our local health systems continue to respond to the COVID pandemic.
Develop deep knowledge of a designated beat. Plan collaboratively with editors to identify storylines on that beat to follow. Develop and maintain contacts on designated beat. Ensures that all content produced meets KUT standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance. Actively incorporates diverse perspectives and voices into the editorial process. Identify blind spots in our coverage and suggest ways to mitigate them.
Develop new treatments for local news products, including podcasts, multimedia storytelling and live, in-person content presentations.
Organize and manage special projects and participate in audience outreach efforts that may include but are not limited to--hosting live news-focused events; hosting neighborhood conversations; speaking to civic groups about public media's journalistic role in the community.
Participate in on-air fundraising and make special public appearances as assigned; serve as on-call talent for special coverage during emergencies.
Report local news content, including newscast spots, feature stories and live interviews aired during daily programming on KUT, with a focus on creative, original enterprise reporting and analysis, for KUT's on-air and online platforms, including KUT.org and associated social media channels.
Report news for state and national programming as appropriate; participate in newsroom editorial and planning meetings; participate in group editing sessions; provide editing for broadcast and digital stories as assigned.
Supervise one or more interns and other staff as assigned.
Bachelor's degree. Two years of professional experience within a news organization. Experience meeting strict deadlines and reporting under strict time limits. Experience covering daily and spot news, in-depth features. Must be able to multi-task. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Bachelor's degree in Radio/TV/Film, Communications, Journalism. Two years of full-time broadcast reporting and/or production experience in radio or news programming . Demonstrated ability to conceptualize news coverage for broadcast and digital in creative or innovative ways. Superior production skills including use of Adobe Audition. Knowledge of public radio local and national news. Spanish speaking skills.
$60,000-$75,000 + depending on qualifications
Lift and move standard office files and supplies. Various conditions for reporting in the field. Work hours may include occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays during peak periods to meet deadlines.
