KET is Kentucky’s only statewide media organization, serving more than one million people each week with programs and services that educate, inform, and inspire.  In addition to broadcasting PBS programming, KET produces a variety of award-winning local productions. KET also creates and provides highly-regarded instructional resources, reaching students and educators throughout Kentucky and the nation.  KET has the following full-time position opening at its Lexington Network Center.

JOB TITLE:                Managing Editor  

REPORTS TO:          Director of Public Affairs



Works closely with the Director of Public Affairs to implement production priorities, content goals, and to monitor and evaluate progress.

With the Director of Public Affairs, responsible for establishing newsroom organization, communications, operations, procedures, and expectations.

Responsible for monitoring the adherence to journalistic, quality, and technical standards, including KET and PBS production standards.

Supervises Coordinating Producer/Assignment Editor, Manager of Frankfort Operations, and Host/Journalist; responsible for the day-to-day management of newsroom personnel, including producers, associate producers, directors, and other production and post-production personnel assigned to public affairs programs, as well as contract personnel and interns. Effectively leads, coaches and mentors staff providing oversight, timely feedback, and guidance on program development. 

Closely monitors news developments and leads newsroom content decisions, including topics, story selection, participants, and other aspects in collaboration with editors, producers, and others. 

Works with the Coordinating Producer, Manager of Frankfort Operations, and Host/Journalist to make and monitor daily, weekly, and long-term assignments and deadlines for newsroom personnel.

Creates and implements a breaking news response plan. 

Ensures the creation and maintenance of required program logs, contact lists, and calendar of events.

Responsible for the timely preparation and maintenance of all records and paperwork necessary for the production, broadcast, streaming, and archiving of public affairs programming, including budgets, facilities requests, broadcast and streaming rights, copyright information, and contracts for personnel and services.

Oversees Legislative and Supreme Court coverage and works closely with the Manager of Frankfort Operations to ensure content and technical quality. Coordinates the use of Legislative and Supreme Court coverage, Capitol studio productions, as well as the production of other programs.

Actively demonstrates and provides oversight to help ensure a consistent dedication to diversity in sourcing, topics, recruiting, and approaches. Participates in interviews and hiring recommendations.

Ensures adherence to ethical, journalistic, and legal standards, including reviewing stories for accuracy before broadcast or streaming. Sustains KET’s reputation as the standard-bearer in public affairs.

Manages content distribution across multiple platforms; strengthens digital journalism capacity, defines digital responsibilities for each member of the public affairs staff, and integrates digital production into the daily workflow.

In collaboration with the Director of Public Affairs and others, secures and manages work with external media outlets, agencies, and other partners.

Assists with public affairs productions including writing and proofing scripts, booking segments, selecting, and securing guests as needed.

As a representative of KET management, participation in public events, panels, speaking engagements, programming and/or productions will be done in accordance with the Guidelines Governing Outside Appearances and Potential Conflicts of Interest for Professional Staff and, where necessary, with the prior approval of the Chief Content Officer.

Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission of KET.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field of study plus five (5) years of broadcast and digital journalism production is preferred.
  • Practical experience in television may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Journalism skills including understanding of editorial standards of accuracy, thoroughness, ethics, and balance required.
  • Experience in journalism reporting, producing, and editing is preferred.
  • Agility in working in fast-paced environment with keen attention to details is essential to success in this role.
  • Strong content editing/proofreading abilities, including knowledge of AP style.
  • Excellent people management skills, strong communication skills, conflict management, organizational skills, and strong attention to detail are required. 
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team, in an environment of multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines. 
  • Knowledge and interest in government, Kentucky politics, history and culture preferred.
  • Public broadcasting experience is highly preferred.
  • Must be available on a flexible schedule and for weekend and overnight work. 
  • Must be able to carry production equipment (up to 40lbs).
  • Must maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
