About the role

As our Communications Manager, you’ll ensure SRL’s messaging is consistent and engaging across all platforms. You’ll work with SRL’s growing network of teachers, students and partners to promote our educational mission and brand and nurture national and local partnerships. You’ll draft written materials, prepare presentations and communicate with local and national media. You will set ambitious goals and develop campaigns to reach audience growth and engagement objectives. This person works closely with the SRL director and digital producer to create targeted content to engage and grow SRL’s connected communities. This person will also build community through local and digital events at schools and stations across the country.

This position is grant funded for 12 months. Continuing employment is subject to performance and availability of grant funds.

Your first 90 days

You’ll get to know your team and the wider organization, and how each group functions independently as well as part of the whole. You’ll learn about the schools we work with and writing in SRL style. You’ll have partnered with local PBS stations and built solid foundations with each. Our audience and engagement will have grown due to your ideas and strategies. 

What success looks like

You thrive in a start-up like atmosphere, bringing vibrancy and terrific ideas to meetings. You’ve connected with not only the SRL team, but with others throughout the NewsHour, as well as the student media, public broadcasting and education fields. You’ve earned trust and are commended for your ability to communicate the importance of student voice and journalism. You have built relationships to get the job done. You’ve secured funding for Student Reporting Labs and have a great rapport with funders.

You’ll bring:

  • A track record of building and maintaining highly engaged communities online and through special events.
  • Experience strategizing, building, and executing campaigns around mission-driven content and communities.
  • Familiarity with social planning platforms, such as Hootsuite and TweetDeck.
  • Editorial and technical fluency on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok.
  • 3 years of professional experience managing social media platforms for a nonprofit or news organization.
  • Degree in communications, marketing, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
