Job Description:

Community Reporter, Digital, PBS NewsHour (Oklahoma City, OK Area)

Remote, Full-time, Regular, Exempt

Reports to: Senior Editor

The PBS NewsHour is hiring reporters as part of a new team created to improve and expand the quality and reach of our journalism. From climate change to institutional racism, from economic inequality to political polarization, PBS NewsHour’s Communities Initiative aims to establish ground-level reporting on local issues and bring vital local perspectives to our national coverage. Having experience reporting from and being knowledgeable about your community, you will bring attention to issues that are having a local impact before they gain national attention. Your stories will provide local perspectives, diversity, and sourcing on issues that are already part of the national conversation.

Relocation will not be offered for this position since the priority is to report from where you already live.

You’ll get to know your team and the wider organization, and how each group functions independently, as well as part of the whole. You’ll establish key relationships with your peers, and bring ideas and pitches to editorial planning meetings with senior leadership. By day 30, you’ll contribute to enterprising and breaking news, features, and analysis reporting and have bylines on the website, social platforms and/or other digital NewsHour platforms.

You are regularly contributing to both breaking and longer-form, in-depth news reporting for our digital products, and when needed, for broadcast. You bring terrific ideas to pitch meetings. You are eager to experiment with different ways to tell stories, on a number of platforms. You’ve developed trust with team leaders. And you have grown your own skills and can point to evidence, such as improved reporting or writing, or telling stories on a new-to-you platform.

  • Well-developed sourcing within your community and region.
  • 5+ years of experience, with a specific interest and experience in reporting on diverse communities; degree in journalism or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in local, regional, and national news content creation, including breaking news and feature story telling in digital formats.

  • Comprehensive and competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Generous 403(B) employer match
  • Holiday and paid leave programs
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Competitive parental leave policy

Since 1973, the PBS NewsHour has been grounded in public service journalism. With the creation of this new team, it hopes to help broaden its balanced and in-depth news coverage through better representation of the communities it serves.

NewsHour is unique in that the team is small and tight-knit, and must accomplish what no other daily news organization does: be the gold-standard of reporting for a nightly broadcast, as well as to around-the-clock crucial digital platforms.
