ABOUT THE JOB

The Social Media Editor will guide the social strategy for news for each of its social platforms. You'll work closely with several managers, editors and departments across Lehigh Valley Public Media, so communication, flexibility, and collaboration will be key assets. Your role as Editor will work with the newsroom's Digital Team on strategy, focusing on growth and engagement. You'll work in partnership with the LVPM social media lead from MarCom. Working with multiple departments throughout the organization, you'll foster an understanding of social media strategy and digital best practices by analyzing metrics to better serve the audience, drive engagement and build trust.

We're a growing public media company with a television station and an NPR radio station that is building a newsroom and new digital platform. We're in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania - a news-rich community whose traditional media have been battered and shrunken by layoffs and corporate ownership. Our mission: Reinvigorate our community with journalism that informs and enlightens - and beat back the shadows of a looming news desert.

 

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Working under the guidance of the Digital Director, set the social media news strategy for each social platform.
  • Monitors the social media accounts for performance on each platform to develop ways LVN can use new platforms, tools and tactics.
  • Works with LVPM's Membership and MarCom teams to develop and execute community engagement strategy.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of special news coverage, packages and live events.
  • In breaking news situations, send out push notifications ensuring that messaging is platform appropriate and complementary to what is being posted on the social platforms.

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATES ARE:

Versatile and steady under pressure. Able to bloom in a startup environment and will not get frustrated or overwhelmed by the pace of growth. Lives and breathes social media - and not just what is currently "hot" but what is in the pipeline. Have an eye for compelling social media content and the ability to communicate in a language that is platform specific.

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATES HAVE:

  • Demonstrated experience in operating and growing social media presence for a news brand.
  • Solid, independent news judgment. Strong familiarity with the mission of public media.
  • Understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
  • Experience with intellectual property issues involved in publications generally and Web publications in particular.
  • Experience working in a large news organization with remote reporters.
  • The ability to create social media visuals, including video and gifs.
  • Experience reporting, writing and/or editing under daily breaking news conditions

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree preferably in Journalism, English, or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience.

Five years of experience in daily journalism (digital, print and/or broadcast); two years of experience in editorial decision-making; one year of experience managing relationships with social media companies (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.)
