Job Description:

The Opportunity

Join the Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting team and our growing organization as a Part-time Fill-in Producer for The Confluence, WESA’s daily news program! This is an exciting opportunity to work with a community organization that distributes trusted content, builds connections and strengthens our communities through public media.

In this position, you will assist the Confluence team with show preparation, researching, scripting and scheduling interviews, and other duties. You will pitch segment ideas, help  write web copy and occasionally edit interviews. The work hours can vary as this position is needed to fill-in for vacation schedules.  This part-time position reports to the Vice President, Broadcasting.

Who Are You?

You’re an early-to-mid-career journalist with a passion for daily news you want to bring to southwestern Pennsylvania. While you’re eager to find the who, what, when and where, it’s the why behind an event, issue, or phenomenon that really drives you. You know how to find a source quickly, what departments to ping and expertise to call upon.

You’re a kind and supportive team member, and comfortable communicating your needs to others. You’re willing to accept and offer constructive feedback. You know how to write questions that get to the heart of an issue, and how to edit concisely and ethically to represent the source as they are. You stay cool under pressure (live radio can be a wild ride!).

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience as a radio or news producer, preferably in public radio.
  • Proficiency in digital audio editing with Adobe Audition, studio technology and practices, and digital content.
  • Sound and ethical news judgment, with a commitment to balance, fairness, and accuracy.

Who Are We?

Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting is a team full of passionate and fun people dedicated to our crafts as well as our communities. Our organization plays a vital role in building connections across southwestern Pennsylvania and strengthening our communities through exceptional journalism and cultural exploration and education . . . and we have a powerful broadcast network to help!

We operate two local public radio stations and a local newsroom that serves the community across radio, digital and event platforms. 90.5 WESA is Pittsburgh’s NPR News Station and WESA News is an award winning, dynamic and ambitious newsroom serving southwestern Pennsylvania over-the-air, online and through our daily newsletter, Inbox Edition. 91.3 WYEP is one of the most highly regarded non-commercial Triple-A music stations in the country and has been a cultural institution in Pittsburgh for almost 50 years.  With a combined weekly listenership of more than 153,000 people and more than 60,000 social media followers, this is a fantastic opportunity for a producer to help PCBC continue to grow.

What’s it like working at PCBC?

We place a high priority on employee safety and well-being; given the current COVID-19 pandemic, most operations are remote. Like many of the jobs at PCBC, this position will be hybrid with the flexibility to work in and out of the office. The hours for this position will vary as the primary function is to assist in covering staff vacations.  The shift is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (can vary depending on scheduling needs).

PCBC is committed to creating a safe, supportive environment for employees with a variety of backgrounds and life experiences, and we are proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

The position pays $17.50/hour.  As a part-time, exempt employee you can participate in our retirement plan (with up to a 6% match!).  We also offer paid parking, which is helpful when we can all get back into the office. PCBC invests in our professional growth and encourages continuing education and participation in conferences and seminars.
