Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Producer to play a key role on our Curious City team in creating and developing exciting and innovative audio content. 

Curious City is a people-powered weekly podcast, radio segment and digital project that answers questions the public asks about Chicago, the region and the people who live here.  

We are looking for a Producer who has a passion for creative collaboration, strong editorial instinct, and demonstrated experience developing and producing highly engaging audio stories.  Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who believes in the power of audio to connect, inspire, and transform.    

Creativity is key and the best candidate will bring compelling ideas for Curious City stories and treatments to the table and will take joy in shaping ideas with others.   The best candidate will possess an appetite for experimentation -- and the courage to try things that might not work out. They will have a minimum of three years of experience working across a wide array of production styles, formats and story-types, such as interview, narrative and non-narrated.  They will also be experienced in audio mixing and scoring. With strong journalistic skills and ethics, they will have the ability to give clear, constructive guidance to less experienced members of the production team.    

The right Producer will work alongside the Curious City Editor to build original, engaging shows of the highest quality, identifying opportunities for new, unexpected and sustainable programming. They will also be great time managers, and will be able to consistently hit deadlines. The ideal candidate will love working closely with other producers, supporting and advising those who are less experienced by nourishing talent and empowering it to grow.  They will also work closely and productively with diverse stakeholders in marketing, development, digital, legal, and corporate underwriting to ensure our work has maximum impact. 

Key Functions 

  • Conceptualize, produce, edit and mix Curious City weekly podcast and broadcast episodes at the highest level, on deadline.  

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues on Curious City and across the organization to maintain the highest editorial standards and successful distribution of Curious City episodes.  

  • Support less experienced colleagues both editorially and creatively. 

  • Support and enhance audience development strategies to ensure the success of our show. 

  • Work strategically alongside the Editor, Curious City, to build relationships and partnerships both within and beyond the organization, which can develop into new shows and opportunities.  

  • Actively work with Curious City team to increase audience engagement with diverse communities. 

  • Challenge, nourish and empower those you work with, furthering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity and continued editorial and creative excellence. 

Required Skills and Experience 

  • A passion for audience driven storytelling, and experience collaborating with diverse communities to find stories that might otherwise remain untold. 

  • Outstanding production skills, with a proven and demonstrable track record in audio production, preferably in the podcast space.  

  • Experience working alongside less experienced producers to create work of distinction. 

  • Ability to work in an editorially collaborative way – to articulate your own ideas precisely and concisely, and to recognize and build on strong ideas that come from others.  

  • Skilled at juggling a variety of daily tasks, with demonstrated expertise in effective project management.  

  • Excellent writing, editing, communication and organizational skills. 

  • Ability to apply the best audio storytelling techniques to long-form and short-form stories. 

  • Strong project manager, demonstrating resourcefulness and success in managing multiple, simultaneous projects with ease  

  • Thoughtful, resourceful, creative, collegial, flexible and calm under pressure.  

  • Passion and enthusiasm for podcasting and the opportunities it offers for inspiring and original program making. 

  • Knowledge of the Chicago region’s rich diversity of stories, sectors and communities is helpful.
