About PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL)
SRL is an award-winning national youth journalism program that connects classrooms and after school programs to local public media stations and the PBS NewsHour. SRL is a leader in the youth media landscape, currently operating in 150 school communities in 46 states. Thousands of teachers use SRL’s journalism, civic engagement and video production resources, and participating students produce video journalism that is regularly featured on local and national news media. SRL consists of a small, ambitious and talented team of journalism and education professionals who work closely with a growing network of students, teachers and public media partners.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Student Reporting Labs is looking for an Associate Youth Media Producer to guide engaging, creative and an inclusive experience for student journalists. Our ideal candidate is passionate about youth development, journalism, video production and creating opportunities for middle and high school students. In this role, you’ll manage a portfolio of 25 schools and working with teachers and students throughout the school year on the production of original youth-driven new stories.
YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS
You’ll get to know your team and the wider organization, and how each group functions independently as well as part of the whole. You’ll establish key relationships with your team, students and teachers. You’ll connect with local public media station partners, communicate regularly with teachers and students, and work with students to pitch and edit youth-drive stories with both local and national impact.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
You will have built strong relationships with students and teachers in your portfolio. You know how to work with the SRL team to accomplish goals around special projects and elevating student work. You’ll also understand the process of feedback and enjoy working with different team members to produce the best work.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Proficient in entire Adobe Creative Suite
- Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit broadcast quality video
- Crystal-clear communicator, both in writing and in person
- Bachelors degree in journalism, communication, or a related field; minimum 2 years’ professional experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Skilled at prioritizing and managing multiple projects, taking initiative, and working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
