WGBH News seeks to inform, educate and enlighten our audience on both the news of the day and the news in historical context through in-depth, high quality journalism using the best tools and methods of the craft. WGBH News seeks always to report on and facilitate discussion of the news with integrity, fairness, balance, accuracy and civility. We also seek to tell the stories of and allow expression of the diversity of voices that make up our entire community.
WGBH News is looking for an ambitious, self-starting journalist to both curate the homepage and create original content for the website. This is a hybrid position that will require someone who feels comfortable editing stories on a variety of topics, creating social media assets to share on our various platforms, pitching and writing originally reported stories specifically designed for an online audience, an eye for visuals that will break through the cluttered environment that is the worldwide web, and the ability to multitask. The shift for this position is Sunday through Thursday, 1pm to 9pm.
Edit and publish stories from reporters with a keen eye for clarity, grammar, headlines and visuals. Push these pieces on social media.
Manage the News and Boston Public Radio homepages to ensure the freshest and most compelling content is featured based on news value, analytics, and coordination with digital managing editor.
Create and publish social assets including but not limited to video clips, templated graphics, call outs and polls.
Monitor analytics and switch out headlines/visuals if a story isn’t performing well.
Work with reporters to make sure their stories have all required elements, including art/photos, audio/video, and social media assets.
Assist in writing copy for newsletters and push notifications for the news app.
Pitch and create original online content.
Take photos and gather other visual elements for all digital platforms.
Attend story meetings and pitch ideas for graphic, video and other digital assets to embed in stories being produced across the newsroom.
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills across a wide range of story types (feature, long-form investigative, show posts and breaking news)
- Ability to select appropriate art/photos to illustrate stories
- Ability to adhere to GBH News’ editorial guidelines
- Knowledge of social media platforms and how to craft posts for different audiences
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum of two years experience as a digital producer/editor at a news organization.
Experience working with AP style. Bachelor's degree required. A degree in journalism is a plus.
