About the Role



WHYY is seeking a motion graphics designer and video editor for the Digital Studios department at WHYY. This position is responsible for creating graphics, animations, and editing services for WHYY’s properties across digital platforms including YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The position may specialize in project management, editing, animation, graphic design or a combination thereof. The ideal candidate has hands-on post-production experience, advanced understanding of Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Animations and designs make also be incorporated into pitch materials, marketing campaigns and internal presentations. The ideal candidate will be able to clear and secure rights for images, utilize existing templates and create new ones for video editors. You have a functional understanding of Adobe Premiere and will be able to lay in graphics and work with composite images. You will collaborate with editorial and social teams to ensure brand consistency. You're able to assist on video production and have an advanced understanding of the production process for digital content. You bring flexibility and an open mind to shared projects. You welcome feedback and build efficiencies within your environment. You don't shy away from tackling big ideas and challenges. You know how to create structure within the autonomous nature of your role. Experience with news, content, TV, web publishers or agency work preferred. Basic understanding of social platforms and analytics a must.





  • Create original designs and animations for Digital Studios content.

  • Work in After Effects and Premiere to create motion graphics templates for video producers.

  • Create compelling data visualizations, graphic montages, thumbnails logos and pitch materials.

  • Assist in video shoots, providing guidance, feedback and best-practices for content that needs animation.

  • Understanding of video and social media platforms, trends and analytics.

  • Find archival footage and negotiate with rights-owners for licenses.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated writing skills with careful attention to detail.

  • Excellent organizational, project planning, presentation, interpersonal and time management skills.

  • Experience with DSLR cameras, video and photography is a plus.

  • Basic recording and audio knowledge a must.

  • Composites animations and contributes to editing in Adobe Premiere.

  • Maintains a regular and predictable attendance at WHYY offices in Philadelphia.

  • Support third party production partners when necessary.

  • Perform related special projects or other duties as assigned.

  • Report to VP, Programming and Production.

  • Must have sample animation and a portfolio of work to demonstrate skills and abilities.


Education: A Bachelor’s degree in production or related field or the equivalent professional experience is required. Familiarity with research, web content, development and Premiere editing experience is essential.


Experience: A minimum of five years’ experience in video, graphic design, or equivalent,  including editing of original motion graphics, experience working on short form pieces and previous experience preparing content for multimedia platform distribution is required. Experience with maps, data visualization, archival footage and YouTube explainer videos necessary.


Technical Skills: Demonstrated expert-level ability with After Effects and other design software in the Adobe Creative Suite. Must be able to operate recording equipment and have a strong understanding of post-production workflow; familiarity with social media and the YouTube is needed. Strong story development skills necessary.
