About the Role

 

 

The Senior Director has a key leadership role, responsible for all the marketing, communications, and public relations activities within WHYY. This position is responsible for overseeing and implementing a comprehensive marketing, communications, and public relations strategy that encompasses the membership and audience growth and financial support for the organization. This position will drive the development and execution of strategies that enhance WHYY’s reputation, promote its services, and support its mission.  The position will be representing the company and forming strategic partnerships with the media, overseeing public relations efforts, and writing press releases. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, creative, and passionate. They should be adept at working under pressure to meet deadlines, establish priorities, and effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously. Additionally, the candidate should possess several years of business experience, with a preference for expertise in multiplatform media management across various channels such as television, radio, news and digital. Proficiency in consumer public relations and marketing within this dynamic landscape is crucial.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Directly supervises one Director, Public Information and Community Relations and one Director, Marketing and Brand Manager.

  • Responsible for the overall communications strategies, marketing programs and events for WHYY and Billy Penn.

  • Monitor WHYY’s reputation.  

  • Oversees the development and implementation of communications programs supporting strategic priorities set by the President and CEO.

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining strong media relationships and partnerships.

  • Quickly and expertly handles sensitive information and issues: effectively and calmly handles crises.

  • Leads the organization’s response to internal and external crises and critical issues.

  • Provides leadership and mentorship to the Director, Marketing and Brand Manager and the Director, Public Information and Community Relations.

  • Works with the President and CEO to articulate the vision and direction for the organization.

  • Responsible for activities in the functional areas of implementation of marketing initiatives, media relations, public relations, media advocacy, issues, and crisis management.

  • Coordinates the implementation of local marketing and public relations campaigns.

  • Works with staff to ensure knowledge of and adherence to branding guidelines.

  • Protects and enhances the organization’s image.

  • Collaborates with executive team to develop strategies to promote the organization.

  • Management includes developing integrated goals and performance standards for direct reports. Interview, hire and train staff. Mentor/coach staff and empower team members to lead and champion WHYY initiatives.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing communications plan encompassing marketing strategy, tactics, public relations, and community relations.

  • Collaborate seamlessly with corporate partnerships, philanthropy, and membership departments to ensure marketing support and deliverables align with annual goals.

  • Spearhead all public relations efforts and serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization.

  • Make strategic recommendations regarding communication strategies based on a keen understanding of industry trends affecting Public Media.

  • Demonstrate fluency in measurement methodologies relevant to above-the-line marketing, including the Neilsen Ratings System.

  • Showcase exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects within aggressive timelines—proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and adhere to deadlines.

  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders to develop media plans and create marketing/advertising assets utilizing various formats.

  • Interact proactively with internal and external partners to gain insights into program goals and objectives.

  • Engage with media agencies, suppliers, and partners to develop and flawlessly execute media plans designed to achieve program and campaign objectives.

  • Internal communications consultant for WHYY departments

 

Qualifications

Education: A bachelor’s degree in marketing or business or the equivalent work experience.

 

Experience:

  • Ten years of experience in leadership roles in marketing, public relations, and communications.

  • Experience applying the principles and practices of marketing and communications planning and consulting.

  • Specialized experience in speech writing, general business writing, writing, and editing for digital, print and broadcast media.

  • Experience in crisis communications and media relations.

  • Expertise in advertising, branding, and marketing of concepts.

  • Proficiency in digital marketing and social media strategies.

  • Experience working as both a team leader and a team member with multiple constituencies: staff, the media, and external corporations.

  • Strategic planning and budgeting experience.

  • Strong leadership, team management, and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.

 

Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word is required.
