WUWM has the largest public radio newsroom in southeastern Wisconsin. Our radio market is Milwaukee – Racine (#42) In addition to covering the local issues that are most important to the community, WUWM’s news team runs special reporting initiatives on significant beats, including the environment, education, and race and ethnicity and 2024 has seen exceptional work on the RNC and election coverage. Their local show and podcast, Lake Effect, brings the community local conversations about the people, places and organizations that shape Milwaukee.


Over the last three decades, WUWM has increased content creation, become more proficient at raising funds to sustain its operation, and expanded its impact on the community. WUWM won 25 awards for work produced in 2023 by the Newsroom, Lake Effect and Digital Teams. The stories and interviews were honored in competitions held by state, regional and national journalism organizations. The independent, educational mission of WUWM and its programs fuel a passionate bond with its growing listenership.

 

Reporters at WUWM research, prepare, and report stories from the Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin region that are balanced, issue-oriented, and analytical for use in news and/or public affairs programs. Reporters employ editorial judgement to select sources, conduct and record interviews, write scripts, and may edit audio and/or video during the production of reporting assignments.

WUWM is looking to hire a General Assignment Reporter and Specialty Reporter (Education). The General Assignment Reporter will develop stories for on air and digital platforms about various news and community related events and issues affecting Milwaukee and the surrounding region The Specialty Reporter (Education) will execute similar duties to a general reporter, but seek additional information, interviews and develop content that addresses education. This reporter will develop special projects, including collaborations with other beat reporters (Race & Ethnicity and Environment). One example would be producing two series each year.

Reporting duties specifically include:

 

  • Contributes to content including interviewing sources, writing stories/reports, and completing other necessary production tasks to create news/public affairs reports
  • Applies editorial judgment and maintains industry standards of journalistic ethics and excellence
  • Stays abreast of developments in assigned areas, maintains contacts on continued stories to ensure follow-up, and research topic areas to provide in-depth reports
  • Collaborates with digital content teams on both long-term and short-term multimedia projects

This position requires the ability to work weekdays, evenings, and occasional weekends, as well as means of transportation to conduct off-site reporting and interviews.
 

Work will be performed primarily on-site at the Chase Tower in Milwaukee. Hybrid work options may be available with specifics regarding work location requirements discussed during the interview process.

 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to discover and produce in-depth issue-oriented stories for broadcast and digital platforms.
  • A bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience, OR 5 years of experience in broadcast journalism
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Southeastern Wisconsin issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WUWM and/or public radio
  • Audio editing experience
  • For specialty reporting position, 2 years of experience working specifically with or covering diverse populations, related to the specialty reporting area

Target Salary Range: 

$52,000-$65,000 (Salary will be determined by finalist's experience, training, education, and equity-based factors. )
