Position Summary:


It's an exciting time for Southern California Public Radio (SCPR). We are relaunching LAist, a beloved local digital news site, and we're seeing record growth in radio listeners. We're also looking for a creative and ambitious editor to help us take our report to the next level.


The Assistant Managing Editor works directly with the Managing Editor to craft long-term strategy and help run the day-to-day operation of our newsroom. As a key member of the editorial leadership team, you'll play a critical role in shaping the stories we cover and how we approach that coverage. We're looking for someone who thinks about audience first in assigning and executing storytelling and is committed to making sure the editorial team does the same.


Our reporters cover beats and stories for a diverse Southern California audience. We're aiming to explain the news, break news and tell stories you will not find anywhere else.  


Position Responsibility:

  • Assign daily news and feature stories to reporters, working with Managing Editor and other editors to prioritize and assign as appropriate for broadcast, digital and live event platforms. 
  • Lead staff in developing original reporting and sourcing across Southern California's diverse communities to produce market-leading coverage in key topic areas
  • Regularly review audience/story metrics and identify and execute plans to grow our digital audience.
  • For digital platforms, assign and edit to serve audiences for those platforms; use SCPR's digital content management system and social channels effectively
  • Lead coverage and communicate through written story budgets, daily editorial meetings and ongoing dialogue with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Work collaboratively to support program staff, digital producers and newscasters.  Participate in editorial projects and special programming. 
  • Provide clear guidance, feedback and supervision to assigned staff.  This includes daily editorial direction and feedback as well as regular formal performance assessment.
  • Working with senior news leadership, hire, supervise, train and manage direct staff.
  • Assess performance of assigned staff by establishing standards, working to encourage professional development. 
  • Represents newsroom internally and externally.
  • Other duties as assigned


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field
  • Five years' reporting experience, with two years' editing or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness. 
  • Experience with digital audio editing systems or ability and willingness to learn.


Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Excellent news judgment and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to public service journalism
  • Experience with scheduling, planning and workflow
  • Strong writing, editing, and radio production skills (or the ability and willingness to learn)
  • Ability to make quick decisions and communicate them effectively
  • Ability to effectively execute multiple assignments on deadline
  • Track record of running high performing teams.
  • Ability to work collegially and creatively with staff and colleagues at all levels of experience


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages commonly used in southern California
  • Project management expertise
  • Local market or subject-matter expertise a plus


Reporting To This Position: 2-4 reporters
