Position Summary:

In this role you will report to the SVP, Chief Development Officer and serve as a member of the Philanthropic Development division's senior leadership team, assist the SVP, Chief Development Officer, in driving the day to day operations of the division, manage selected development operations and partner with senior leaders of the division and larger organization to successfully drive the growth of philanthropic revenue for Minnesota Public Radio and American Public Media. 

You share responsibility for driving $26M in annual and campaign revenue, developing effective fundraising strategies, creating an inclusive and engaged division environment and developing a philanthropic culture among staff and board. 

As the Director, you lead the prospect research and donor stewardship function and work cross-functionally to create and drive effective development strategies; ensure that giving opportunities are compelling and reflect the organization's highest strategic priorities; and promote effective support for the division's success. 

You will play an integral role in completing the $75,000,000 Inspired by You Campaign and prepare for a series of special gift initiatives to be launched as the Campaign is concluded.  If you are an individual with demonstrated experience and success across all development disciplines including capital campaigns and one who is drawn to strategy development and creative problem solving, we'd love to hear from you.

Position Responsibilities: 

Assists the SVP, Chief Development Officer, to drive day to day operations of the division

  • Serves as a key partner in achieving all division goals and crafting a creative and productive work environment, embracing continuous improvement. Works closely with SVP Development, Directors of Major and Planned Gifts, Institutional Giving, Marketplace Development, Works closely with SVP Development, Directors of Major and Planned Gifts, Institutional Giving, Marketplace Development, Communications, and Capital Campaign Manager to build an inclusive team environment, execute revenue goals and fulfill annual plan objectives.
  • Co-leads with SVP annual planning for development program and budget; quarterly retreats, employee engagement, employee development and succession planning.
  • Pursues best practices for division including standardizing processes for attracting and recruiting diverse hires, providing effective on-boarding, and advancing
  • With SVP drives annual plan to identify talent, enhance staff's cultural competency
  • Leads annual budget preparation, management, forecasting and reporting for the division, maintaining a focus on integrating reports and data into decision-making.
  • Proposes agendas and prepares materials for Board's Development and Campaign committee including talking points, memos, materials and reports for various meetings and committees.

  • Assists in building organizational relationships that are critical to the ongoing success of the Philanthropic Development division's efforts, including acting as liaison with Finance, Research/Reporting/Analytics, IT, Content, Audience Development, Business Development, and Underwriting.
  • Serves as liaison with other cross-functional teams from major/planned gifts, audience development, IT, finance, and content to advance understanding of philanthropy and development and ensure support of revenue growth.
  • Serves as a proxy for the SVP on operational and strategic initiatives as assigned to advance philanthropy.
  • Fosters a creative and productive work environment, embracing continuous improvement. 

Leads effective development operations to support revenue generation and donor stewardship 

  • Leads strategy for development operations pursuing a high level of quality for all services that support successful revenue generation including gift processing; analytics and development reporting; and CRM/Salesforce.
  • Supervises Development Operations (gift processing) and Donor Prospect Research teams.
  • Identifies, prioritizes, and achieves key process improvements that benefit MPR/SCPR relating to data systems, revenue growth, and donor retention.
  • Promotes best practices relating to CRM systems that evolve development's work and support growing philanthropy.  
  • Establishes and enforces effective standard operating procedures and processes and holds staff accountable to those standards.
  • Convenes key operations and administrative staff to align priorities, develop processes, and support philanthropy.
  • Leads, with Campaign Manager, the monitoring and management of campaign gift spending by partnering with Content, Audience Development and Finance staff to create and recommend uses of donor funds, tracking and reporting on spending activities, and ensuring that donor intent is met. 

Designs and helps drive strategic development plans

  • Drives design and implementation of fundraising plans with SVP, Campaign Manager and Directors of revenue teams.
  • Drafts annual fundraising plan, plans for mini-campaigns within the Capital Campaign, and plans for special gift initiatives.
  • Assists Content leaders outside the division in understanding opportunities for development support and in shaping funding concepts that align with donors' interests. 

Partners with senior leaders and campaign manager to successfully execute and achieve capital campaign's success.

  • Serves as a key strategist on donor proposals, relationship management, and campaign execution.
  • Partners with Campaign Manager and other division leadership to advance campaign implementation.
  • Ensures best-practices are achieved for donor prospect research, gift tracking and reporting.
  • Supports Campaign Manager with the monitoring and management of campaign gift spending by partnering with Content, Audience Development and Finance staff to create and recommend uses of donor funds, tracking and reporting on spending activities, and ensuring that donor intent is met.
  • With Campaign Manager, designs processes for tracking of naming, stewardship, donor reporting, and other campaign reporting. 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master in related fields desired; CFRE desirable
  • 8-10+ years managing successful development teams in a high volume, large, complex non-profit organizations
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a complex, data-intensive operational and analytical realm.
  • Demonstrated success in creating and executing development plans and strategies
  • 5 years supervisory experience, preferably with larger teams
