Fellow, Research & Production - APM Reports

Are you an audio nerd? Like to share and critique podcasts? Consume news on a variety of platforms? You should be part of the team that produces some of best audio documentaries in the world. You'll get to help producers and reporters find sources and do background research for reporting trips. You'll also pitch ideas for our podcast, Educate, request and gather data for stories and conduct pre-interviews. This fellowship position will assist with the production of radio, podcast and web projects at APM Reports, the national documentary and investigative unit of American Public Media. Some projects might be investigative, others will involve intense research largely having to do with education in America. This is a fellowship aimed at building your skills in storytelling, journalism and radio production. As you help us to create our programming, you'll get a taste of a wide range of tasks but there is also flexibility to focus on and explore aspects of this work that interest you most, whether that be audio editing, reporting, data analysis, digital production, or something else.


Key Learning Goals:

  • The process of identifying, researching and creating longform audio documentaries. This entails practice of in-depth research and sourcing, audio editing, script writing and more. We provide a hands-on, practical experience in this.
  • Help produce an episode of the podcast and contribute to the longform audio documentaries.
  • Practice using ProTools audio editing software.
  • Write a podcast script and find and research and report that podcast episode.



  • Conducts research for producers and correspondents to support reporting on education documentaries, including library/internet research, and pre-reporting calls to sources.
  • Conducts research for producers and correspondents to support reporting and production on special projects. Potential to source and conduct interviews for special projects documentaries.
  • Contributes to weekly Educate Podcast production, including pitching stories, pre-interviewing guests, writing scripts and editing audio, as needed. Potential to help produce episode(s) of the podcast throughout fellowship.



  • Partial subsidy for onsite parking or bus transportation. Day to day transportation is your responsibility.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 1 year of professional experience outside of college newsroom, radio station or newspaper OR have earned a master's degree within the last 12 months.
  • Someone with significant work experience looking to change things up and break into media.
  • Work experience with or interest in reporting/research.
  • Ability to write, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in public affairs journalism and the documentary form.
  • Knowledge of public radio.
  • Ability to manage time and task load independently.
  • Ability to type and work on PC-based programs like Windows XP, Word and Excel, and must possess general computer skills, including Internet research.
  • Daily tracking of regional and national news through radio, newspapers, TV and the Web.
  • Ability to learn new computer programs quickly.
  • Ability to learn new skills in a fast-paced environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Mac-based programs such as Pro Tools editing software.
  • Demonstrated journalism, radio and news writing experience.
  • Documentary and in-depth project experience.
