Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) is one of the nation's premier public radio stations producing programming for radio, digital and live audiences and operates a 46-station radio network serving nearly all of Minnesota and parts of surrounding states. Reaching 1 million listeners each week, MPR and its three regional services 'MPR NewsClassical MPR and The Current' produce programming for radio, digital and live audiences. 

Your Role: 

As the Manager, Network Station Sales you will hire, train, manage and support a group of Account Executives to achieve their budgets. In this role, you  will create net station sales and marketing strategies and prepare departmental revenue budgets. You will also build and handle an account list, make sales calls, close business and manage an ongoing book of business.

Position will remain open until filled 

Position Responsibility: 

  • Supervise staff; hire, train and coach, provide performance feedback; provide quarterly performance reviews; develop individualized development plans as warranted
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment.  Create development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
  • Manage individual account executives to achieve their sales budgets each month
  • Set quarterly and annual sales goals for network account executives.
  • Manage sales inventory
  • Coach account executives in the field
  • Provide training/share knowledge of tools (SalesForce account management software, Neilson, Tapscan, Profile,)
  • Apply audience data including qualitative and quantitative research
  • Develop ongoing product packaging opportunities for broadcast/digital/live events
  • Manage trade requests and handle trade template/contract forms with finance dept
  • Manage promotional requests and work with marketing department on promotional opportunities
  • Motivate, train, and encourage sales team to achieve goals in digital media sales
  • Initiate contact and negotiate sales with both direct and agency clients
  • Review and set rates for net stations and develop sales packages for broadcast/ digital/ events.
  • Provide reports to Director, Sales on network staff's individual and team performance.
  • Visit net station markets when appropriate.
  • Plan annual sales seminars with Director, Sales, and present educational/motivational information at seminars. Lead annual network sales seminar.
  • Cultivate and maintain a sense of teamwork with net station sellers.
  • Plan and conduct net station monthly conference call.
  • Interface with other departments at net stations as well as St Paul location.
  • Handle additional projects as required. 

Sales Duties: 

  • Manage an agreed upon list of accounts
  • Identify new underwriting prospects using broadcast, print and digital media; trade publications (marketing, advertising, industry specific); business contacts.
  • Prepare written and in-person presentations designed to meet prospect needs and resources and to encourage both a renewed and increased funding commitment.
  • Identify and execute appropriate prospect cultivation that results in sales cycle closure.
  • Identify digital sponsorship and advertising opportunities for both current clients and prospects. 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum 5 years experience in media sales and management including digital media
  • Management experience must demonstrate an ability to create and encourage high standards, demonstrating an ability to teach, inspire and lead. 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: 

  • Proven track record of successfully meeting income targets through both prospecting and client upgrades
  • Ability to produce high quality sales presentations
  • Understanding of broadcast inventory management
  • Excellent organizational, communication, management and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of broadcasting industry research, both quantitative, and qualitative
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based software and office equipment
  • Leadership and personnel skills and ability to develop high performing teams
  • Knowledge of the marketplace - local/regional advertisers
  • Ability to bridge departments to create buy-in and to accomplish tasks
  • Professional, confidential demeanor and ability to exercise judgment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide-variety of internal clients and staff, and a high degree of initiative and attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in the fast-paced, ever-changing and at times, stressful, environment
  • A familiarity with and specific interest in public radio, its programs and audiences

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Minimum two years of supervisory/management experience 

Reporting To This Position: 

  • 3-6 Net station Account Executives
