American Public Media produces a slate of award-winning podcasts. The department is growing quickly and adding shows every season.  We make podcasts for curious listeners.  Our shows explore new ideas, uncover truths and tell human stories.

Your Role:

As the Marketing Specialist you will be responsible for planning and executing marketing initiatives that grow the audience of APM's rapidly growing podcast portfolio, which includes nationally recognized podcasts like Brains On!, Terrible, Thanks for Asking, The Splendid TableThe Hilarious World of Depression as well as several new shows currently in development. We're looking for candidates who have a solid marketing/advertising background, especially in the digital space, but who also have an entrepreneurial, curious spirit.

You will work collaboratively with the Marketing Manager and Content Production, Audience Insights, and Communication teams to develop marketing strategies based on audience insights. You'll then personally oversee a range of marketing tactics from planning and creative development to execution and analysis, including digital and paid social, event activations, traditional media buys and marketing partnerships. You'll also have the opportunity to identify and test new, non-traditional ways of engaging potential APM podcast listeners.

Position Responsibility:

  • Develops marketing and paid media plans for a diverse range of programs and initiatives, guided by audience insights and research
  • Manages implementation of media plans including placing ads, monitoring performance, and overseeing tactical budgets.
  • Manages relationship between shared marketing and creative services and assigned project teams
  • Oversees development and approvals of copy, artwork and creative assets that are on-brand and on-strategy
  • Keeps internal teams informed of important creative, media and business updates as it relates the brands/programs.
  • Identifies opportunities and implements activities related to partnerships, promotions, new technologies, advertising, and sponsorships.
  • Manage creative development, production, media planning/execution, legal approvals, stakeholder approvals, etc.
  • Participates and contributes to strategic planning conversations and brainstorms, develops audience- and strategy- focused POVs as needed
  • Monitors all budget, billing and production activity on assigned projects and communicate status of each project to supervisor
  • Develops and shares marketing best practices and project learnings with the wider team
  • Supports good, strategy-driven ideas and ensures they come to life

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, advertising or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in Marketing, Advertising or Media Planning
  • Experience managing multiple programs and clients
  • Experience in implementing multi-dimensional marketing projects

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of marketing strategy and digital marketing tactics
  • Ability to learn new tools, systems and processes quickly
  • Strong verbal communication, presentation and writing skills, including proficiency with PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with the creative development process, including developing briefs, identifying deliverables and providing creative teams with relevant feedback
  • Capability to manage multiple projects and programs with a high degree of initiative and independence
  • A high degree of professionalism and accountability; able to learn from problems and mistakes and adjust
  • Strong organization and planning skills, with close attention to detail and deadlines
  • Ability to thrive and maintain enthusiasm in a fast-paced, ever-changing, and occasionally stressful environment
  • Ability to manage personal workload effectively and clearly communicate issues to supervisors
  • A familiarity and general understanding of public radio, its programs and audiences
    • An enthusiasm for the product and company, and an interest in the podcasting space in particular

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Advertising/agency media planning or account management experience
  • Experience with Google AdWords, Facebook Ads Manager, and/or other self-serve advertising platforms
  • Ability to write or edit copy, especially for digital and social

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
