Job Description:

Report and produce video/multimedia stories from Central Washington on a variety of topics full-time for Cascade Public Media. The Central Washington-based multimedia Journalist is an established cross-platform journalism professional with a firm grasp of modern news reporting, visual storytelling and audience engagement techniques.

I. Planning

  1. Conduct in-depth research/interviews to develop distinctive story ideas on various topics
  2. Pitch enterprise stories and multimedia projects that engage digital and broadcast audiences
  3. Display keen judgment, able to identify relevant and enterprise topics ahead of the curve
  4. Enterprise and develop story leads via independent sources, community awareness and social listening practices

II. Self-Sufficient

  1. Serves as the organization’s go-to person for editorial, operational and community needs within the Central Washington region. Will be expected to inform CPM team of area-specific trends and opportunities. MMJ will be both CPM-pioneer and proprietor for the rich issues, ideas and civic engagement unique to Central Washington.
  2. Exemplify strong self-starter and time-management traits as MMJ will be more often working in solo environments
  3. Manage pre-production assignment planning and logistics
  4. Research, gather and produce story elements independently, as well as occasionally part of a team, to complete multimedia projects
  5. Maintain close communication with newsroom on assignment status and support needs
  6. Prioritize short and long-term editorial plans; assignments, community events, source development, etc.
  7. Meticulously self-manage story deadlines

III. Content and Program Production 

  1. Work with the Executive Editor to create a culture of mutual respect, support and collaboration in the Cascade Public Media newsroom
  2. Develop an effective and efficient workflow for CPM visual storytelling
  3. Inspire and mentor our visual teams to advance through timely and constructive input, and professional development opportunities
  4. Develop a culture where data is used daily to measure performance of our local content, and to inform story angles, experimentation and future planning
  5. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent experience required
  2. Minimum of five years of video producing/multimedia/journalism experience; ability to produce text, video and digital content required
  3. Demonstrates excellent editorial judgment; possess journalistic reporting skills; and facility with an array of multimedia storytelling tools and techniques
  4. Experience with prosumer level video and photography hardware and associated gathering and production workflows
  5. Knowledge of common newsroom applications such as Content Management Systems, Adobe CC/Premiere Pro, Slack, Trello, preferred
  6. Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  7. Ability to both self-generate creative projects and work with restrictions to meet very specific project/initiative needs
  8. Demonstrated ability to uphold high ethical standards of professional journalism


  1. Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
  2. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  3. Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
  4. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Washington State driver license
  5. Ability to travel across the region on behalf of Cascade Public Media
  6. Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds unassisted
  7. Ability to work some evenings, weekends, holidays and in inclement weather
