The Community Idea Stations is seeking a Newscast Editor who is energized by the frantic pace of daily news and passionate about mentoring the next generation of public radio reporters to join our WCVE FM News team. This is a full time position with benefits that reports to the News Director.
The Newscast Editor is responsible for identifying, assigning and editing all content featured in WCVE's morning and afternoon newscasts. Working with a growing news team, the newscast editor prioritizes and assigns daily and long-range stories for reporters and interns, coaching them on reporting strategies and developing their audio and digital reporting skills. This position facilitates editorial meetings, sets daily deadlines, edits spot news, fact checks stories and copy edits material for digital distribution. The Newscast Editor will also be responsible for occasional feature editing, assist in curating and writing copy for newscasts and the web and may also report and produce news stories. This position would regularly perform live newscast shifts in a rotation with other newscasters.
The Newscast Editor will also serve as the Student Journalist Coordinator, supervising all WCVE News Interns and News Fellows, including setting schedules, assigning tasks and stories, and editing on-air or digital work. This position will assist in outreach efforts to locate the best candidates for our intern and fellowship programs.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years editing experience, one to three years of on air/newscasting experience and at least one year of experience supervising journalism students and/or interns. Hosting and board operating experience is preferred and public radio experience is strongly preferred.
Candidates should be able to work a flexible schedule including night and weekend hours, be available for travel, and must have a valid Virginia driver’s license with a clean driving record.
