Fish Reporter

Public radio station KDLG has an opening for a Bristol Bay fisheries reporter position beginning mid-May.

Depending on experience, this reporter’s main task will be to write/produce/host the Bristol Bay Fisheries Report dedicated to world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery. You can smartly interview area managers, skippers, and other interesting people in the industry. You don’t mind running down a fair bit of numerical data needed by those on the water. And you excel in keeping things moving with fun segments, clever clips and segues, and will pull useful cuts for the morning news before turning off the lights.

Separately, this reporter may be assigned to Naknek to report on the commercial fishing industry in support of the Fisheries Report.  

Either way, the ability to pitch relevant stories and take a mic and camera around the region to cover Bristol Bay during the dynamic summer is a must. Traveling by boat and small plane is part of the job.

We are looking for a hard-working, adventurous candidate with at least one year of experience in radio journalism. Familiarity with Alaska fisheries is preferred. This a seasonal position.

Radio station KDLG lies in the heart of beautiful Bristol Bay, the sockeye salmon capital of the world. KDLG is owned by the Dillingham City School District and serves Southwest Alaska communities. Dillingham is a commercial fishing community with a yearly population of 2,500. Dillingham, like all of Bristol Bay, is accessible only by air with daily flights from Anchorage. The town has a population that is fifty percent Alaska Native and is the hub for a number of Native villages in the region. The mountains, lakes, and rivers in the region make it one of the premier destinations for hunters, fishermen, and other outdoor enthusiasts.
