American Public Media is the largest station-based public radio organization in the U.S., combining multi-regional station operations, national content creation and distribution in one organization. One thousand stations carry American Public Media's 20-plus national programs. Its multi-regional station operations include 49 public radio stations and 42 translators in the Upper Midwest and California.

Your Role:

As a member of Minnesota Public Radio and American Public Media's Philanthropic Development team raising on average $26M annually (including capital campaign), you advance the philanthropic goals of MPR|APM by setting, guiding and evaluating the annual plans for development communications and donor stewardship.  You are tasked with creating strategic communication and donor stewardship strategies that elevate the awareness and perception of MPR|APM within the philanthropic community and heighten donor experience and retention. 

You will build the MPR|APM development brand within the organization and in the greater philanthropic community. In this position, you lead the communications and donor stewardship team and work closely with the Directors of Major and Planned Giving; Institutional Giving; Development Strategy and Operations; and the Manager of the Inspired by You Campaign. You also collaborate cross-departmentally with Corporate Communications, Membership, content areas, and Marketing. 

As the director, you will blend both fundraising and corporate communications best practices and lead the creation and implementation of effective, strategic development communications, working both vertically and horizontally across the Philanthropic Development Department and the larger organization. 

Reporting to the SVP, Chief Development Officer, with dotted line reporting to the Managing Director, Communications, Audience Development Services, you are a member of Philanthropic Development division's senior leadership team and active member of the Communications and Audience Development teams.

Position Responsibilities: 

Lead internal and external Development communications efforts.

  • Mentor and lead the communication and stewardship team.
  • In collaboration with the Manager of Corporate Communications create, implement and evaluate an annual, comprehensive, strategic development communications plan to raise internal and external awareness of MPR's philanthropic giving priorities and initiatives among key donor prospects, stakeholders and influencers, and to amplify and reinforce MPR's brand and reputation.
  • Collaborate with peer Development directors and Corporate Communications team to create and implement a plan that ensures that the CEO and other senior officers are visible among targeted audiences that influence revenue and other resources for the organization.
  • Oversee production of all Philanthropic Development communications designed to acknowledge/thank, cultivate, steward and solicit donors, including annual report; year-end report; brochures and direct mail; email and website content; event invitations; presentations; on-air, and video communications.
  • Lead planning and development of capital campaign communications, including case statements, web site, talking points and other campaign documents and collateral.
  • Ensure that all Development communications messaging is consistent and aligns with MPR/APM messaging and organizational branding.
  • Work closely with Planned Giving and Leadership Circle team to assess and prioritize needs, and to help develop and monitor communications with this donor segment, ensuring consistency with Development's and organization-wide messaging.
  • Manage outside vendor relationships, i.e., photographers, writers, printers, consultants.
  • Work collaboratively to align donor and member messaging to build engagement with the audience throughout the giving experience.
  • Understand the needs of different donor audiences and effectively target key messages to specific groups using a variety of mediums.
  • Willingness to both create as well as manage communications related work.
  • Manage an annual budget for both regular and Campaign communications. 

Collaborate with other departments throughout the organization

  • Work closely with the Managing Director, Communications and Communications team to ensure collaboration on planning, strategy and to maximize media and other opportunities.
  • Coordinate with the social media team to expand and grow Development's social media presence; explore using social media to interact with new donor audiences.
  • Represent Philanthropic Development in team meetings with Communications, Audience Development and Membership.
  • Develop relationships with content teams to learn about their programs and create compelling stories that inspire donors and influencers. 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, business communication or related field.
  • 8 years of strategic communications experience in large development operations with comprehensive, development related communication including managing communications professionals and vendors. 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: 

  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success leading and implementing strategic development communications for multiple audiences, internal and external, on multiple platforms.
  • Demonstrated comprehension of development and development communications best practices.
  • Experience recruiting, evaluating, mentoring, and leading communications and stewardship teams.
    • Experience supporting the development of diverse and inclusive environments.
  • Demonstrated collaborative style; cultural competency; effective relationship building and success in "managing by influence."
  • Ability to position communications discussion at both strategic and tactical levels.
  • Demonstrated experience working with all constituent groups including staff, board, volunteers, donors and other supporters.
  • Demonstrated success integrating social media into communications strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with design and other vendors.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects concurrently and completing on time.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and work under pressure.
  • Demonstrated success in working effectively with staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to easily adapt to change.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Working knowledge of AP style. 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Experience with major charitable fundraising campaigns and campaign communications
  • Familiarity with Minnesota philanthropic community
  • Knowledge of public radio programming and non-profit organizations
  • Experience with graphic design, HTML and PowerPoint.
