Broadcast Engineer/IT Specialist

JOB SUMMARY:         

Responsible for supporting and maintaining mission critical audio and information technology equipment in a broadcast environment maintaining the technology necessary for keeping the station on air while ensuring the station is in compliance with all FCC requirements for engineering.


  • Assist all staff with computer hardware and software issues
  • Maintain all corporate network security requirements including deployment of approved batches and virus protection
  • Oversight of maintenance on network printers and connectivity
  • Configure desktop computers and LAN and standard network protocols/configuration
  • Set up network equipment, including firewalls, routers, and managed network switches
  • Install and maintain broadcast electronic equipment
  • Resolve technical issues with studio and transmitter equipment
  • Perform system documentation audits and updates
  • Monitor and report station outages
  • Maintain station Public File in accordance with FCC requirements. Track and confirm FCC online station   files.
  • Complete weekly EAS tests
  • Log and maintain EAS test files
  • Complete preventive maintenance of transmitter and studio sites
  • Manage all contractual engineers and technicians as needed
  • Support remote broadcasts on-site, including setup and tear down
  • Complete yearly departmental budget
  • Maintain equipment inventory
  • Assist  management with long range planning of equipment replacement and repairs
  • Assist with grant proposals and bids
  • Assist with all engineering responsibilities in conjunction with fund drives, including IT and phones
  • Participates in on-air fundraising drives and other station-sponsored events as required

Required Skills:

Familiarity with broadcast studio operation and equipment including consoles, audio routers, remote equipment, audio processing, audio streaming, automation systems and distribution

Experience with satellite receiver systems, microwave transmitters/receivers and broadcast transmitters

Knowledge of power and electrical distribution including generators

Experience configuring desktop computers, LAN and standard network protocols

Experience with network equipment, firewalls, routers and managed network switches

Knowledge to read and understand station signals levels

Knowledge and ability to re-establish connectivity with transmitter

Self-starter and highly organized


Associates or technical degree in Information Technology or related field; or equivalent experience

5 years radio broadcasting engineering experience and FCC regulations            

SBE certification a plus

3 years management experience

Must be able to respond to emergencies 24/7

Ability to multi-task

Good at problem solving and prioritizing

Great team player

Must possess valid driver’s license and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance

Must be able to climb ladders and the ability to lift 50 pounds
