Job Description:

ABOUT THE PBS NEWSHOUR

With roots in public service journalism since 1973, the PBS NewsHour today is expanding with bringing thoughtful, in-depth news coverage to a wider audience. Innovative and fast-paced, life at the NewsHour is focused on collaboration, trust, and above all, reporting, analyzing and breaking, meaningful news with the highest editorial standards.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The PBS NewsHour is opening a new bureau outside of its headquarters in Washington DC to serve as a western-based reporting hub and a production center for an updated nightly broadcast. The new “PBS NewsHour West” team will emphasize reporting on news and feature stories especially from the western part of the country, contributing to the national broadcast and its associated digital platforms. It will also lead an updated nightly broadcast for the Pacific Time zone feeds with late breaking news and developments.

We are seeking a talented, hard-working, ambitious team to launch this bureau later this year. The Senior Producer will be the team leader for this new effort, as well as a regular contributor to the national program and its associated social and digital presence.

This role will be based at PBS NewsHour West’s new home in Phoenix, Arizona at the Arizona State University Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS

You’ll get to know your team and start creating a bond that will allow you to work together like a well-oiled machine. You’ll also be working with the wider organization in DC, learning how each group functions independently as well as part of the whole and how your bureau fits in. You’ll establish key relationships with your peers, while being exposed to executives through participation in editorial planning meetings. You’ll contribute to enterprising and breaking news, features, and analysis reporting for the website starting on day one, and by day 30 you can expect to see your bylines on a variety of digital platforms.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

You have successful launched the west coast bureau. Your team is regularly contributing to both breaking and longer-form, in-depth news reporting, keeping the same style and quality that the PBS NewsHour is known for. You bring a vibrancy and terrific ideas to pitch meetings. You get kudos from not only your immediate team, but from others throughout the organization for your ability to connect as well as to get the job done. You’ve developed trust with executive leadership. And you have grown your own skills and can point to evidence in your improved reporting.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

You possess:

  • Experience producing the highest quality, creative original content for a nationally visible digital platform.
  • Impeccable writing and communication skills.
  • Ingrained editorial integrity.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced newsroom setting, adjust smoothly to changing assignments under deadline pressure, and collaborate positively and enthusiastically with a small team.
