Manager of Development Communications & Foundation Relations - Denver

Rocky Mountain Public Media, home to Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO radio, is the largest statewide, member-supported, multi-media network in Colorado. To further this mission, Rocky Mountain Public Media seeks a full-time Manager of Development Communications & Foundation Relations.



The Manager of Development Communications & Foundation Relations will be an integral part of the Leadership Giving team and will provide strategic and technical service by developing philanthropic revenue opportunities. Working closely with the senior and Leadership Giving teams, this individual will assist in the articulation of Rocky Mountain Public Media's (RMPM) mission and funding priorities in ways that increase funds raised from philanthropic donors and sponsors. The Manager will serve as the primary writer for the Development team and will work with senior staff to help articulate Campaign and other annual fundraising priorities and write a variety of donor communication and development materials. Candidates must possess exceptional and demonstrated writing skills as well as meticulous editing and proofreading skills and extraordinary attention to detail. The Manager must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, a professional and resourceful demeanor, the ability to work both independently and as a team player, and desire to take initiative and manage numerous projects simultaneously.



  • 50%--Author, develop and edit philanthropic proposals to individuals and foundations (corporate, family, community, independent, public along with government and state entities) in support of the development team's fundraising priorities, including RMPM's $30million Capital Campaign.
  • 30%-- Oversee statewide grants process and manage all grant and Foundation support.
  • 10%--Develop communications strategies that retain donors and cultivate new prospects.
  • 10%--Assist with donor engagement events and other stewardship activities.


Oversees and writes a wide variety of Development materials, including proposals in support of annual, program and capital priorities, impact reports, donor newsletters etc., to effectively support the fundraising goals of the development team and convey RMPM's mission to diverse constituencies. Authors materials that communicate fundraising opportunities to a variety of external audiences including Board, major donors and prospects, members, foundations and the general public. Collaborate with the senior team, VP of Leadership Giving and Leadership Giving Officers on creative and innovative ways to more deeply engage high-capacity donors and drive major gift revenue. Review existing proposals and documents and provide advice or revision regarding the presentation of philanthropic opportunities. Work with capital campaign team on managing grants and foundations processes, creating narrative templates for reports and proposals, prospecting materials, and donor packages. Oversee statewide grants process: assist with assembly and submission of grant proposals, letters, reports and other written materials that respond to funder requirements, priorities, and deadlines; responsible for tracking and meeting grant annual revenue goals. Develop relationships and partnerships with Foundations through strategic cultivation and stewardship that results in more resources and broader audience reach for RMPM. Create donor strategies for retention and re-engagement of lapsed foundation donors, and for stewardship and engagement of current supporters. Liaise with counterparts at partner PBS stations to determine best practices in major gifts fundraising, specifically related to grants, identify fundraising trends to guide internal processes, collect relevant data and ensure consistency and accuracy of internal information for external distribution. Collaborate with contract grant writer to complete and submit all grant applications to secure funding; identify new grant opportunities, and manage the grant development and proposal process. Develop a fundraising strategy for Foundation support to reach annual goals; conduct prospect research to identify and seek new Foundation support. Manage all grant deliverables, including cultivation, application submission, gift agreement, financial reporting, budget-to-actuals analysis and impact reporting. Track and create a calendar of grant opportunities'including deadline dates, required materials, etc. Collaborate with program and finance teams to ensure compliance of grant funding and grant fund expenditure is in accordance to grant contracts. Serve as liaison between the development team and other internal departments (membership, underwriting, and production) to identify new opportunities for collaboration and donor support, and collaborate with staff in developing strategies to support programs and initiatives that attract and promote community partners and cultivate and engage donors. Progress new development initiatives from initial concept to design of a fundable request, articulating initiatives in diverse formats as appropriate, and once funded, reporting on uses of funds and results. Strive to continuously improve the quality, impact, and effectiveness of RMPM development proposals and communications.


Bachelor's degree with exemplary academic performance in Journalism, English, Marketing or Communications a plus. 5+ years of experience in grant writing, product development, sales, marketing or communications. 1-3 years of professional writing experience. Knowledge of state, regional and national foundations a plus. Previous experience developing funding proposals and development communications in a non-profit environment preferred. Excellent project management skills with a history of managing complex projects, delivering quality work on time and within budgetary guidelines. A demonstrated ability to write concise and compelling content for diverse audiences and diverse platforms. Ability to write in a variety of voices and tones, and to bring a fresh perspective to recurring assignments and topics. Detail-oriented, adaptable and organized candidate with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Strong analytical, problem-solving skills needed; proactive in anticipating needs and reacting to urgent requests. Excellent oral and written English communication skills. Self-motivated individual and ability to work both independently and as part of a team preferred. Strong leadership skills with influence to build collaborations towards a common goal. Strong writing skills and familiarity with AP Style. Attention to detail, with a keen eye towards grammatical and spelling errors. Experience with sourcing opportunities, cold-calling, contact development, and customer service and relationship management skills a plus. Database management software experience a plus (i.e. Salesforce, Raiser's Edge etc.).
