Join a groundbreaking effort to make public radio more diverse in sound, story and sources. St. Louis Public Radio is looking for an editor to lead a nationwide, four-person team of reporters for a collaborative project with the mission of improving the diversity of issues, voices and perspectives in public media storytelling.
The project is funded by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and includes four stations across the country (St. Louis; Hartford, Connecticut; Portland, Oregon; and Kansas City). Each station is hiring one reporter and St. Louis Public Radio is also hiring an editor, based in St. Louis, to guide the project.
The goal is to provide a fresh examination of race and ethnicity in the U.S.country, through the unique lens of the cities involved in the project. We aim to cover a wider scope of issues than we currently do, hear from people who are often overlooked and ultimately expand the impact of our reporting.
For that reason, it's important that we find an editor who is highly organized, a good communicator, a skilled leader and sharp thinker. We want someone who is passionate about covering issues of race, ethnicity and diversity and who is dedicated to quality journalism. A background in radio is not necessary, but a passion for public radio-style storytelling and a commitment to the mission of public radio is essential. We will train those who haven't worked in radio before.
The editor's job is multifaceted. It includes communicating with reporters and editing stories from conception to completion, ensuring the goals of the grant are met, managing regular communication with the four newsrooms, traveling regularly to the stations where the other reporters are based and organizing training sessions for reporters.
- Five years of editing experience.
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, education or a related field required; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, proven news judgment and journalistic integrity.
- Ability to multitask and work on diverse projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated ability to act as a newsroom leader.
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with both internal and external audiences.
- Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule.
- Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment.
- Three to five years experience as a reporter.
- Experience managing staff who are working remotely.
- Familiarity with cross-platform storytelling.
- Familiarity with the variety of issues likely to come up in the region's where the reporters are based.
- Strong social media skills.
- Some newsroom management or project management experience.
