Job Description:

TPR is looking for an editor who has an ear for sound and good story-telling to help shape our news coverage by finding and producing original story ideas and interviews and working with reporters in the newsroom to develop stories from conception to completion.  We are looking for someone who is highly organized, a sharp thinker and excellent communicator.  A passion for the mission of public radio is essential.


Texas Public Radio is a mission-driven, award-winning, multimedia organization serving an audience of more than 200,000 across a wide expanse of the state.  Our growing newsroom includes a 14-person team of reporters, hosts, editors and producers who serve our local and regional audiences. We are part of a strong statewide Texas Station Collaborative that allows us to provide even richer content and programming.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop story and interview ideas for TPR’s coverage.

Initiate, plan and produce news and feature material.

Make assignments for daily news cycle programs. Adjust coverage when necessary.

Edit daily news and feature scripts

Work with reporters to ensure that news stories and features are of the highest quality by focusing on details such as accuracy, crisp and clear writing and excellent sound use.

Ensure that multimedia elements (such as photos, videos graphics) are part of the story.

Write scripts, set up interviews, produce and edit program segments as needed.

Participate appropriately in station fundraising and sponsorship activities and live events.

Fulfill administrative obligations related to assignments, including filing prompt and accurate program information/summaries, maintaining contact with and keeping the team informed about assignments, keeping appropriate files and submitting timely expense reports.

 

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum three years’ newsroom editing experience.

Experience working in deadline-driven newsrooms.

Experience using audio editing software and equipment to produce content for broadcast.

Experience using social media platforms. 

Strong preference for candidates with public radio experience and reporters who have covered minority issues.

Fluency in Spanish a plus.

 

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications or related field, or equivalent experience.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Finger Dexterity:  Using fingers to make small movements such as typing or picking up small objects.

Talking:  Frequently conveying information, instructions, and ideas clearly and quickly.

Hearing:  Able to hear average or normal conversations, in person or by phone.

Repetitive Motions:  Frequently and regularly using the wrists, hands, and fingers.

Visual:  Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or other materials.

Physical:  Ability to travel. May have to lift papers, books, recording equipment and other items weighing up to 10 lbs.
