Texas Public Radio (TPR) is looking for a Vice President for News to lead our ambitious and growing news team. We are looking for someone who dreams audaciously and implements practically, who can articulate and implement a strategic vision for multiple news platforms. The VP for News will set editorial policy, manage and direct all aspects of TPR’s news gathering efforts, and oversee the production and promotion of NPR-quality newscasts, features and programming.

Our newsroom includes a 14-person team of reporters, hosts, editors and producers who serve our local and regional audiences. We are part of a strong statewide Texas Station Collaborative that allows us to provide even richer content and programming.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate with TPR’s Executive Leadership Team to develop collective road map for TPR consistent with its mission and Vision 2022 strategic plan.
Develop and implement the News Department’s long and short term strategic goals.
Manage and direct the overall operations of the News Department, including its news and programming output across multiple platforms and its department budget.
Set editorial policy and provide overall editorial guidance and oversight of news and feature production, daily and weekly programming and online content to ensure it meets the highest TPR and NPR standards.
Recruit, manage, and develop the proficiency of the News Department staff.
Provide regular feedback on programming and staff performance.
Liaise and work closely with the statewide Texas Station Collaborative (TSC), NPR and other public radio groups to support and strengthen local, statewide and national coverage.
Develop partnerships with appropriate news-related groups that would enrich and expand TPR’s coverage.
Advise the President/CEO on national and international news programming.
Serve as a community ambassador through speaking engagements, moderating or participating in panel discussions, and individual outreach.
Assist with promotional and fundraising activities.
Contribute to the general management of TPR as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, broadcasting or related field.
Minimum of ten years' experience in relevant broadcast news and public affairs programming. Preference given to candidates with public radio experience.
Radio news production experience required.
Professional news management experience required.
Editorial experience required.
Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
Evidence of solid news judgment, journalistic principles, ethics and standards.
Familiarity with and commitment to public media’s missions and values.
Excellent organizational skills.
Strong communications and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work under strict deadline conditions.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.

Physical: Ability to travel. May have to lift papers, books, recording equipment and other items weighing up to 10 lbs.
