Position Overview

Dorchester is one of Boston’s largest neighborhoods. Its size and diversity means Dorchester is actually a collection of enclaves with a racial-ethnic flavor or class identity: African American, Irish Catholic, West Indian, Vietnamese, middle class, working class and low-income. Some are hotspots for violent crime, others are home to police officers and firefighters. Dorchester’s demographics are shifting as housing prices rise, new developments are built, and residents move in and out.
The Dorchester Reporter will work this rich news environment, producing enterprise stories about trends and the bigger picture of neighborhood life, filing features about undiscovered people and places, taking suburban listeners to areas where they may never venture. and turning news spots when merited. The Dorchester reporter will also produce a similar range of spot news and features about two adjoining neighborhoods, Roxbury and Mattapan. Roxbury is the traditional home of the city’s African American population, though it is increasingly Hispanic and white. Mattapan has the highest percentage of black residents of any city neighborhood and a large Haitian presence.
We’re looking for an experienced self-starter who will be confident and comfortable working on his or her own most of the time in our Dorchester bureau. This person will need to respond to breaking news, as well as develop longer enterprise stories.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the curiosity and energy to search out distinctive and compelling stories that capture a neighborhood’s voices and characters. That requires having a human touch to reach out to a wide range of people and get them to talk on tape. Also required will be the sound news judgment to identify spot stories that say something telling about these urban neighborhoods but resonate with our audience beyond them.
In addition, the Dorchester Reporter will take one shift weekly in the newsroom as the rotating day-of air reporter.
This is likely a Sunday-Thursday position.
The Dorchester Reporter will report to a Senior Editor and maintain communication with that editor.
